Former Dallas Cowboy Herschel Walker makes Mixed Martial Arts debut

You remember Herschel Walker don't you? 1982 Heisman Trophy winner and running back for the Dallas Cowboys who loved Dallas so much he almost quit playing professional football when Dallas wanted to trade him? You rarely see that kind of devotion to a team any more. Now Herschel has a new sport - Mixed Martial Arts fighting. He made his professional MMA debut Saturday January 30th in Sunrise, Florida.

Even though Herschel Walker is known for his incredible athleticism on the football field ... he was not expected to do well because of his age. Herschel Walker turns 48 on March 3rd. Nevertheless, Mr. Walker's disciplined training paid off. He dominated his 26 yr. old Hungarian opponent, Greg Nagy, landing 77 of 106 strikes compared to Nagy's surprisingly small total of 7. Herschel won by T.K.O. (when the fight is stopped) ...

"The experience was exciting ... this was very tough." Herschel said after the fight. Beforehand he said his mother had "been praying that they wouldn't find an opponent for me. Even though she wants me to do it ..."

Will he continue fighting? ...

Herschel Walker still resides and goes to church in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. A devout Christian man who proves the old saying: "Meekness isn't weakness. "

“Mixed Martial Arts”? Call me sexist, but I figure the guys would have an unfair advantage.

Anyone who willingly fights Herschel Walker really needs the help of a Psychiatrist, although a regular doctor would prob be needed first.

He left his shoe in Minnesota. Other than that, I have nothing to say about the guy.

I loved to watch him play football. He had a unique running style. He had blazing, Olympic caliber speed but was so big his did very little cutting back. Instead, he would tip toe to the line looking for a seam and then he would explode. He would be running full speed in a couple of steps.

Congrats to Herschel on the victory, however, the opponent he fought was just horrible. I haven’t seen fighting skills that bad in a high-level MMA organization since the early days of the UFC when only a few fighters really knew how to fight.

He almost single-handedly won three Super Bowls for Dallas in the ‘90s.

That's what happens when you replace a Georgia Bulldog running back, with a Florida Gator running back.

That’s a tough one for me - as a Florida State graduate who is a lifelong Cowboys fan. I have immense respect for Emmitt Smith and what he did in Dallas. I do wish I could have seen Herschel Walker run behind that ‘93, ‘94, and ‘96 championship offensive line, but (as I alluded to in my comment) that line probably wouldn’t have existed but for the blockbuster trade-of-all-trades that sent Walker to Minnesota. That trade involved 18 players directly, and I think I read one time that a total of something like 50 players or so wore a Dallas uniform at one point or another as a direct or indirect result of that trade.

Emmitt Smith himself was a direct result of the trade, as Dallas used Minnesota’s 1st round pick in 1990 to trade up a few spots to take Smith.
