My giving up tasty pleasures for Lent is NOT because I didn’t follow through on any NY resolutions. I don’t do NY resolutions. I give up things I love during Lent as my own personal sacrifice. Period.
I didn't say that was necessarily the case. I considered that very point, and that is why I used the words "may be," rather than "are," in this sentence:
"Whether by giving something up or taking something on, these folks may be using Lent as a second chance at the New Years resolutions they stopped doing, oh, sometime around January 8."
