Skip to comments.Palin vs. Romney: It's the Statism, Stupid

In a USA Today analysis of Mitt Romney's pre-2012 groundwork for a second presidential bid, Susan Page highlighted the contrasts between Romney, the choice of the Republican establishment, and Sarah Palin, favored by conservatives and anti-Washington activists such as those found in the Tea Party movement:
Page notes that Romney's book, heavy on policy prescription, includes his familiar "three pillars" reference. It has also become part of every major Romney speech, especially his address to CPAC this year:
Romney said there are three pillars upon which we should build: economy, security and family. This is where Romney misses the mark and Sarah Palin shines, in our opinion. As we have frequently pointed out, for any structure to stand, it must be built with four pillars, not just three. Romney gives short shrift to the need for a smaller, less intrusive federal government. This "Federalist" pillar is often cited by Gov. Palin in her speeches and written opinion pieces. It addresses one of the major concerns of small-government conservatives and libertarians alike. That Sarah Palin has made modern Federalism one of her major talking points reveals that she is the better student of Ronald Reagan, for whom the concept was also one of his favorite themes.
But it also reveals Romney as the statist he is. While Gov. Palin is not a pure libertarian by any means, her philosophy of government resonates with the opinions of a growing majority of Americans. A January Washington Post/ABC News poll found:
A survey conducted by by Rasmussen Reports in mid-December also showed that an overwhelming majority of voters reject the big government ways of both major political parties:
Lower taxes, as the Bush Administration proved, are not enough. True fiscal restraint requires cutting spending while simultaneously cutting taxes...

I want a Todd Palin vs. Mitt Romney arm-wrestling match. Like the Stallone movie, “Over The Top.”
Romney's liberal past and unprincipled nature hangs around his neck like an albatross. There is no upside to a Willard candidacy in 2012.
True. Sarah would dominate Romney in arm-wrestling, or anything else for that matter.
(Although the ever-seedy Mitt Romney might actually like that in some strange, kinky way.)
Romney can say anything he likes , this is one Republican who refuses to vote for him.
Didn't Romney get 3x more votes than Palin at CPAC, a conservative gathering? Not only did the CPAC people pick two losers (Ron Paul and Romney), but Palin was an afterthought. I know some people love Palin, but her lack of support is eliminating her frontrunner chances.
Mitt Romney is a RINO’s ultimate wet dream.
even if it’s between he and Obama?
Nice try, but 75% of CPAC attendees didn’t even bother to vote in the straw poll, perhaps because of the Ronulan kids who showed up just to dominate the poll for their guy.
The straw poll is not scientific; the public opinion polls conducted by Rasmussen, etc. are. Mitt’s narrow lead in the Gallup poll was less than the survey’s margin of error, which means it was a statistical tie between Palin and Romney.
CPAC becomes more establishment Republican every year, despite the barnburner speeches by Rubio and Glenn Beck.
I'm another who won't vote for him, regardless of what he says.
"Economy, Security and family" are not much better than "hope change and unity", until you come up with some specific plans to get out of the way and/or help each.
I wasn't trying anything. My point was if she cannot garner a substantial amount of support at CPAC, then she might not be the dynamic candidate that some people are making her out to be. Since it wasn't scientific, then perhaps she should have gotten even more votes. I question how 'conservative' CPAC is too. What a strange poll result
You might have something there. I think I heard that if you paid for a sponsorship, you also got podium time. That is wrong.
Obama will not run, and Romney won’t either.
Given a choice between a gun grabber and a gun grabber, I’ll write in someone else.
