On Sheep, Wolves and Sheepdogs

Subject: Sheep, Wolves and Sheepdogs

Miss Edwards, I read of your 'student activity' regarding the proposed memorial to Col Greg Boyington, USMC and a Medal of Honor winner. I suspect you will receive a bellyful of angry e-mails from conservative folks like me. You may be too young to appreciate fully the sacrifices of generations of servicemen and servicewomen on whose shoulders you and your fellow students stand. I forgive you for the untutored ways of youth and your naïveté. It may be that you are, simply, a sheep. There's no dishonor in being a sheep - - as long as you know and accept what you are. Please take a couple of minutes to read the following. And be grateful for the thousands - - millions - - of American sheepdogs who permit you the freedom to express even bad ideas. Brett Dula Sheepdog, retired

I’ve read this several times, and would urge others to take a few minutes to read it as well.

One of the best articles on this topic I’ve ever read.

I also highly recommend Lt. Col. Grossman’s book “On Killing”

I've always enjoyed this allegory, but I think it's worth noting that some of our sheepdogs...

...are actually sheepdogs!

Here's a group of sheepdogs that I've gained inspiration from:

From: American Sheepdogs, The Chester County Victory Movement

The Chester County Victory Movement started with a simple purpose – to support our troops. With the guidance of our leader, retired Navy veteran Rich Davis, we’ve grown into one of the largest grass roots pro-troop, conservative movements in the mid-Atlantic region.

We support conservative values and policies, strict interpretation of the Constitution, and a strong national defense. We are also firm believers that victory is always the answer and peace comes through military strength. God bless America.

WE PROTECT THE SHEEP FROM THE WOLVES!

Actually the sheepdog essay comes from Grossman's book titled "On Combat." But I think his first book which was "On Killing" is a seminal work as well.

A real sheepdog never retires, he just chases the wolves in a more efficient way.
