THE ISSUE: Whether presidential candidates today have character, as their predecessors did. In looking for a president with the character of Dwight Eisenhower, Harry Truman and Ronald Reagan, Ralph Peters asks, "Will we ever again have a president who didn't go to an Ivy League school, who knows what it's like to struggle -- as so many Americans struggle every day -- and who's tasted defeat, but got back in the ring with his dukes up?" ("Why Our 'Post-Modern Presidents' Fail,").
The answer is "yes." Her name is Sarah Palin. etc...

The tighter you grip this “Palin is Reagan” mantra the more votes will slip through your fingers.
Palin will never become Reagan until
she distances herself from Juan McShame.
Palin isn’t Reagan and Reagan isn’t Palin.
She has taken more crap than Reagan ever did and at her age has more political experience then Reagan had at her age.
I doubt that Sarah kids will ever turn into a Ron Jr or his sister who can’t stand what their father stood for.
And Palin lives pro-life, and she would never put a liberal on the Supreme Court as Reagan did.
I loved Reagan, but he wasn’t perfect either.
I think more people can relate to Sarah’s life more then Reagan’s.
Can’t wait for the day when she can see the Potomac from her house.
You just made a huge mistake. Reagan served 2 whole terms as California Governer. Man never resigned his post. He took the time and worked hard to get where he did.
Actually, you’re the one who made the mistake - in reading comprehension.
The original poster stated that Palin has more experience “at her age” than Reagan did “at the same age.”
No mistake there.
Yes, but...Reagan was left alone to use his 2 terms as Governor as a launching pad in his quest for the White House. Palin would never have been given that respect or courtesy. They fear her a lot more than they did Reagan.
Sadly I must say that Reagan was a failure as a dad. Just look at how screwed up his kids are.
Well, It looks like the ghost of Levi ain’t going away.
It isn’t necessary to knock Reagan to pump up Palin. In fact, that tactic will hands down lose some votes.
The only similarity between what the two faced as governor exists is in your mind.
No, Reagan actually thought he might have to serve as Governor and didn’t seek the Presidency at that age.
If you folks feel like putting Reagan down you go on ahead.
It really is a poor conservative campaign tactic.
[this never gets old]

To: Bob J
I love Palins conservatism and patriotism! She may very well support McCain out of loyalty and I have no problem with that. And I have no problem with whom she supports with her PAC. There is nothing written that says she has to do everything (or anything at all) according to JIM.
Sarah is unabashedly pro-God, pro-Life, pro-Liberty, pro-family, pro-America, pro-constitution, pro-gun, pro-limited government and so am I. And shes wildly popular among the God-loving, Liberty-loving folks with whom I choose to associate. In short, shes a refreshing breath of clean fresh air in an otherwise putrid failure of a RINO infested party.
She represents my interests better than any other viable wannabe at this point and if she decides to run, she will have my undivided support!! Romney, the draft-dodging, Big Government, lying statist political whore can KMA!! And your picture does say a 1,000 words, but Bob, unfortunately theyre all about YOU and political whores like you and the results and likely outcome of your slavish, cultish RINOism!!
So you can shove your picture and your RINOs where the sun dont shine.
Sarah has more guts, talent, ability, patriotism, and sheer determination and love for America and our God-given Liberty than you and Romney and a thousand other RINOS will ever have!
Its been more than obvious for several years that our pro-Life & Liberty Free Republic has become an embarrassment for you, so why the hell dont you just take a fricken hike already!!
Shove it, pal.
GET THE HELL OFF FR if you dont like it, but whatever you do quit your damn whining and pestering good conservative FReepers about your hatred for Sarah Palin!!
Its beyond sickening.

I am not putting Reagan down, but their circumstances when they served as governor were entirely different, something you seem unable to comprehend.
Excuses, But please go ahead with the Reagan bashing. I won’t stop you.
“Cant wait for the day when she can see the Potomac from her house.”
Tina Fey said that, not Sarah Palin.
Russia can be seen from three sites in Alaska:
1. The LRRS radar station on the western most mainland of Alaska. 55 miles to Russia and you can see the Siberian mountains.
2. From an island (St. Michaels?) that is 37 miles from Russia
3. From Little Diomede island you can see Big Diomede island which is Russian. The distance is 2.5 miles and if you can avoid border patrols, you can walk to Big Diomede when the strait freezes over.
This information is, BTW, 4th or 5th grade level and is generally taught under the category of “Astonishing things about Alaska”. In other words, everyone knows this, unless you were sleeping in class.
The Tina Fey comment that you paraphrase leads me to believe that you can’t separate fact from fantasy.
Stating that Reagan wasn't in danger of going bankrupt because of frivilous lawsuits or targeted by the White House while he was governor is hardly “Reagan-bashing.” You are losing it.
Yes, it does.
And you and your pals have a lynch mob mentality. In fact, I sometimes fear that you guys would be quite comfortable participating in a real life lynch mob.
With supporters like you, Sarah Palin needs no enemies.
That’s a bit harsh. I sure didn’t take NavyCanDo’s post as a slam on Palin.
Perhaps I’m wrong, but it seems like he was saying he’d like to see her as POTUS, and using a little popular humor to make the point.
I didn’t mean it to be harsh, but the charge that she said that she could see Russia from her house is one that is trotted out at every available opportunity by Demos whose grasp of reality is tenuous, at best. It appeared in an SNL skit and that is all it is.
It is a good way to put down a Liberal. Very effective as most of the are simply unaware of that Sarah did not say it.
What are you bringing Tina Fey into this for?
I said “I” can’t wait till Sarah can see the Potomac from her house. I would think this would get Libs and anti-Palin people wee-wee,d up, not Freepers.
If accuracy counts then you should probably be careful or someone will call the grammer police.
Sorry, I misread the tone of your post.
My apologies.
No you posse lost it a long time ago.
Those excuses may be okay for some people, but for others it will be a problem. I understand the circumstances and why. I got over that, some in my family haven’t.
So far I have seen Bachmann, who isn’t running, referred to as a “worthless boob” DeMint dissed, Daniels dissed. Anyone your posse deem as a rival to Palin is trashed.
Including the most loved conservative ever, Ronald Reagan.
sad. See ya!
Second, this ridiculous elevation of Sarah Palin to the levels of Reagan, Ike, and Truman is just that -- ridiculous. It smacks of the same worshipful attitude that marks Obamassiah-worship on the left. It's all hope and hormones.
There is nothing in Ms. Palin's experience or writing/speaking to show she has what it takes to a) command Allied forces in Europe (Ike) and lead a Cold War; or to simultaneously restore an economy and win a Cold War (Reagan). There is absolutely no comparison.
Truman is perhaps the closest point of comparison ... but unlike Palin he had the advantage of military experience and a long political career at the national level.
It's worth remembering that -- even with that long experience -- he got steam-rolled at Potsdam, and his missteps there were partly responsible for the start of the Cold War. His record as president was spotty at best, but he did have the wherewithal -- not to mention a couple of eventful and formative years as President -- to engage in the Cold War in 1947 when it became obvious what was happening. But he badly bungled Korea.
Palin doesn't even have Truman's background. She probably does have character -- but that's not enough.
“If accuracy counts then you should probably be careful or someone will call the grammer police.”
It’s “grammar”....”grammar”....”grammar”. Write it one hundred times on the board......no copying and pasting.
Sheesh...

I said Grammer - I meant Grammer.
I support Sarah wholeheartedly as I feel that she represents my views and because she is charismatic enough to draw voters to her.
Anyone ever say that Mitt was exciting? Not even his hair is exciting.
Is she the next Reagan? I think she is something different than Reagan although the overall tone of her approach matches with Reagan.
I will be voting for her as no one else on the horizon looks like they can knock out Obama.
Come on Ralph, stop the revisionism! Reagan was great and Ike was good. Truman was a liberal and a failure. Truman has more in common with LBJ. Both men decided to retire from politics and not run again.
Palin is what 45,I said age! SHE HELD OFFICES.
You are the one with the hang ups, not me.
Okay, I have no hang ups. I do have a problem with people who wish to push their own agenda by destroying the competition.
Sound familiar?
Apparently a poster named FACTMART has a problem with facts.
So what offices FACTMART? Since you are factmart. Back it up and tell us the facts.
Reagan held no offices before he was 45!
So what? You were supposed to supply the facts, factmart. I didn’t ask you about Reagan, he has earned his stripes, God rest his soul.
Hey, you’re back!
Truman faced with the toughest decision any POTUS ever had to make; give the order to drop the A-bomb on two civilian cities....decided it was too tough, quit, went home and wrote a book.
Ike faced the first overt communist aggression post WW2 with a shrunken, ill-prepared army....decided it was too tough, quit, went home and wrote a book.
Reagan faced the USSR at the height of its power...decided it was too tough, quit, went home and wrote a book.
Palin, faced a really mean press and expensive legal games....quit, went home and wrote a book.

Strongly disagree. Truman faced the first instance of overt communist aggression in history as leader of a country that was tired of war and wanted no part of another one, as CIC of a drastically ill-prepared and diminished fighting force and as the first POTUS to have to wrestle the UN into action.
He met the aggressor head-on, checked his advances and pushed him back to square one. Any further action (cross the Yalu or drop the bomb) would have led to another World War with the US and UK (maybe) standing alone against China and the USSR.
It was Ike, not Truman who was POTUS in 1953 when the shooting stopped.
HST made his mistakes but his courage on Korea saved the world from global tragedy unpredictable only in its scope.
Truman does get credit for wading in .... but it's very much his fault that we did so at an immediate disadvantage.
I would say, too, that he badly misread the situation leading to the entry of China into the war. He had a lot of help there, of course, and it's probably the case that he could not have stopped the Chinese invasion. But we were not at all prepared for it -- in fact, Truman ignored a direct Chinese warning of intervention three months before they invaded.
Reagan served 2 distinguished terms as Governor of a state with a population roughly 30 times the population of Alaska.
The size of many countrie, the 7th largest economy in the world. Alaska, by comparison, is one suburb of Los Angeles ;-)

That is 100% on MacArthur. I'm sure you know that he insisted, against all evidence on the ground, that the Chicoms were sitting things out north of the Yalu. Any POTUS relies on G2 from his theater commander. In any event, I rank Truman fairly high on my list of great (ok, really, really good) presidents...he is the only dem on my list.
Wrong-o, Mary Lou. He was elected president of the Screen Actors Guild at the age of 35, during especially turbulent times: SAG president and television
We need to PURGE the Palin haters on Free Republic. and we need to do it now.
This is a cancer that is infecting every dang thread I read these days.
Pick them up like a football and butt their butts into the sunset.
I know. In fact, I voted for him for governor twice. And he faced strong opposition from the Democratic dominated state legislature.
Bob.
What is your deal bud. Do you hate Christians ? Do you hate women ? Are you Pro Abortion ? I am trying to figure out what column to put you in.
I suppose we should consider ourselves fortunate to have had a Reagan at all. Since he left office, everything has unraveled.
