New York Post: Truman, Ike, Reagan: Next Up, Sarah Palin!
Citizen Palin 4 President ^ | Ralph Peters

Posted on 03/17/2010 7:46:25 AM PDT by MaxCUA

THE ISSUE: Whether presidential candidates today have character, as their predecessors did. In looking for a president with the character of Dwight Eisenhower, Harry Truman and Ronald Reagan, Ralph Peters asks, "Will we ever again have a president who didn't go to an Ivy League school, who knows what it's like to struggle -- as so many Americans struggle every day -- and who's tasted defeat, but got back in the ring with his dukes up?" ("Why Our 'Post-Modern Presidents' Fail,").

The answer is "yes." Her name is Sarah Palin. etc...

Yep, peas in a pod...

Truman faced with the toughest decision any POTUS ever had to make; give the order to drop the A-bomb on two civilian cities....decided it was too tough, quit, went home and wrote a book.

Ike faced the first overt communist aggression post WW2 with a shrunken, ill-prepared army....decided it was too tough, quit, went home and wrote a book.

Reagan faced the USSR at the height of its power...decided it was too tough, quit, went home and wrote a book.

Palin, faced a really mean press and expensive legal games....quit, went home and wrote a book.

But he badly bungled Korea.....

Strongly disagree. Truman faced the first instance of overt communist aggression in history as leader of a country that was tired of war and wanted no part of another one, as CIC of a drastically ill-prepared and diminished fighting force and as the first POTUS to have to wrestle the UN into action.

He met the aggressor head-on, checked his advances and pushed him back to square one. Any further action (cross the Yalu or drop the bomb) would have led to another World War with the US and UK (maybe) standing alone against China and the USSR.

It was Ike, not Truman who was POTUS in 1953 when the shooting stopped.

HST made his mistakes but his courage on Korea saved the world from global tragedy unpredictable only in its scope.

He badly bungled it in that he set the stage for it starting ... much the same way that Bush I set up GW2 by not dealing properly with GW1. The North took advantage of their superiority in equipment, and the American withdrawal from Korea in 1949. It was a predictable event, and Truman has to take the credit for overlooking it.

Truman does get credit for wading in .... but it's very much his fault that we did so at an immediate disadvantage.

I would say, too, that he badly misread the situation leading to the entry of China into the war. He had a lot of help there, of course, and it's probably the case that he could not have stopped the Chinese invasion. But we were not at all prepared for it -- in fact, Truman ignored a direct Chinese warning of intervention three months before they invaded.

Reagan served 2 distinguished terms as Governor of a state with a population roughly 30 times the population of Alaska.
The size of many countrie, the 7th largest economy in the world. Alaska, by comparison, is one suburb of Los Angeles ;-)

That is 100% on MacArthur. I'm sure you know that he insisted, against all evidence on the ground, that the Chicoms were sitting things out north of the Yalu. Any POTUS relies on G2 from his theater commander. In any event, I rank Truman fairly high on my list of great (ok, really, really good) presidents...he is the only dem on my list.

Reagan held no offices before he was 45!

Wrong-o, Mary Lou. He was elected president of the Screen Actors Guild at the age of 35, during especially turbulent times: SAG president and television

I know. In fact, I voted for him for governor twice. And he faced strong opposition from the Democratic dominated state legislature.

I suppose we should consider ourselves fortunate to have had a Reagan at all. Since he left office, everything has unraveled.

Are you for real? There are no Palin haters here - just people who are critical of those who put Palin on a pedestal.

If you haven’t noticed, this site is called Free Republic. It is not the Palin for POTUS posse site.

You are sounding like the very people that back Obama. You haven’t the luxury of deciding who goes and who stays, neither do I.

Start a Palin site and ya’ll can sit around and agree, but remember, when she enters the race, she will have competition, and you won’t be able to whine to JR to get rid of them.

That is a union, I said public office, not how many private jobs or offices Reagan had at 45, Palin held 3, Reagan none.

The tighter you grip this “Palin is Reagan” mantra the more votes will slip through your fingers.

Douchenozzle says what?

Palin isn’t Reagan and Reagan isn’t Palin.

She has taken more crap than Reagan ever did and at her age has more political experience then Reagan had at her age.

I doubt that Sarah kids will ever turn into a Ron Jr or his sister who can’t stand what their father stood for.

And Palin lives pro-life, and she would never put a liberal on the Supreme Court as Reagan did.

I loved Reagan, but he wasn’t perfect either.

I think more people can relate to Sarah’s life more then Reagan’s.
