As ultra orthodox Jews who believe Yeshua is the Messiah, and accept both the written and the oral Torah, we can easily see why you would be put off by anyone calling themselves a Messianic “Jew.” You are correct, one can’t make teshuvah and walk contrary to Torah at the same time.
