The Egyptian government provided the Jewish people with houses, food, and jobs. A perfect example of a "socialist state." That didn't stop Moses from bringing down the wrath of God to free them.

It is the inherent nature of all people to desire freedom, even if it means insecurity. They willingly ran into the desert.

How about subsidizing the tobacco industry, or the post office, or almost every farm product produced including wheat, corn, soybeans, sunflowers, etc... Right here in America!

Can you give us some highlights or some of the better smackdowns you used. It sound like you had a good time. At least your professor was open enough to engage in a debate. Plus your request for ideas made for a great thread.

Sorry for the delay in responding. I’ve been down at the lake relaxing following the end of the semester. One of the most contentious points of the debate came when I brought up the socialism in National Socialism. He refused to accept the fact that the Nazis were socialist, claiming instead that they were corporatists who manipulated the free market in order to gain power. I, in turn, brought up the fact that the Nazis engaged in redistributionist policies, and controlled private business through coercion and threat of force, tactics used by socialist governments the world over. He also brought up Scandinavian socialism as a shining example of the potential for socialism to succeed, to which I retorted that the socialist gained power prior to WWII, managed to escape the ravages of WWII, and basically rode out the successes of the previous capitalist government for the next 40 years, with no progress being made. No response was given. And finally when he threw out the classic canard that we don’t have privately owned fire and police departments, or a privately owned military, I responded by saying that it is the proper role of government to provide these services as it protects private property (fire and military) as well as provides protection from the unlawful use of force (police and military). Again no response. As I stated before he tried to drag me off topic by bringing up the topics above, I always managed to bring us back to capitalism vs. socialism. Also he tried to blunt the force carried by calling socialism “slavery” by describing the description as “god and devil terms”, but the truth is hard to deny when presented with evidence.
It was fun, and the professor was courteous and respectful, never interrupting or speaking out of turn.

Again thanks for all of you input, help, and interest.
