Cornell University to Offer Degree in News Anchor Hairdo Studies
http://wmbriggs.com/blog/?p=2270 ^ | William M. Briggs

Ezra Cornell, a generous man concerned deeply about his country and its culture, when he created his eponymous university in 1868 said, “I would found an institution where any person can find instruction in any study.”

Professors at Cornell (my grad school alma mater and partial source of rent) have stretched old Ezra’s words to the limit. How? The “English department will begin offering a new concentration in cultural studies to English majors. The concentration will allow students to study different mediums and forms of culture, including literature, film, the Internet and music in terms of ‘historical, social, and political contexts’.”

That’s the problem with words, isn’t it? People are apt to interpret them too freely. This is why lawyers give over their lives to writing nauseatingly precise contracts. Failing to specify what “pay in full” means in less than three pages ensures somebody will find a loophole.

Old Ezra—and academia in general—now has to suffer the consequences of failing to be exact in what he meant by “any study.” For Cornell will indeed offer Bachelor’s of Arts in “English” with concentrations in the study of news anchors’ hairdos.

Parse this:

“The field of cultural studies examines how culture makes a difference in how we live, and how differences in how we live make culture,” Prof. Debra Fried, English, said in an e-mail. “If you take an active interest in how any form of culture shapes your response to everyday life, you’re already beginning to think and question as cultural studies invites you to do.”

Hey, cultural studies has issued invitations! It would be...

At last! what we need to be internationally competitive!

I guess this is something for really stupid rich kids who have to go to the Ivy League because it is expected but who really couldn’t cut it in a real academic program.

I went back to college at 41 to get a teaching degree. I found most courses completely absurd. I found most professors to be at best morons. I amazed one Education class because I knew 4th grade American history. I was smarted than %99 of everyone I met , students , faculty and administration. It was a joke . I’m sure the same is true of most colleges. People were getting degrees in the most insane subjects.I knew more in high school than most there.

But, this valuable degree will qualify the graduates for careers as hair stylists on news sets. Doesn’t it take a college degree to learn all about that?

Tell me good fellow... who writes, "I was 'smarted' than %99 of everyone I met"?? Or "Rite" instead of "Write"? Pray tell me, does one have 'sense' or does one have 'sens'? I dare say you have neither.

And I PETTY? I merely point out the irony of this braggadocio's comments. How he was “smarted” than everyone else in college. That my good man… is being PETTY. How very petty indeed.

No, you have it wrong. These majors are not for the sons and daughters of the rich, just the opposite. These courses are for the inner city kids who are there on a full ride because their parents did not attend college and who could never have gained admittance to Cornell or any other top ranked University without preferential treatment. This new English major is designed to be easy so that these inner city youts can apply to grad school. It will serve the same purpose as ethnic studies, public administration, or Native American studies. This major will open doors to students to profession that they are totally unqualified to enter.

You would not believe how other universities are dumbing down their curriculum to provide cover for the inadequacies of the new affirmative action students. Some of the top law schools in the country no longer teach precedent. They no longer even have lectures in the last two years, it is all on the job training with a mentor who oversees the work and the progress of the students. At the University of WA law school, a student cannot get below a B+ for any class. It's better (or should I say worse?) than a pass/fail system.

You are right, I am expecting too much.

Well, that isn't what I said, now is it?

If someone is typing fast and the beginning or ending letter of a word is not tapped quite hard enough and you get rite instead of write or sens instead of sense or they get ahead of themselves and % ends up in front of 99 rather than after, is that stupid or lazy or sloppy or what? My opinion was you made a mountain out of a molehill which surprised me, that out of all he said you would nitpick his typing. I don't think he was being arrogant, I think he was pointing out that these schools are full of know-nothings from the top on down.

” ...who writes, “I was ‘smarted’ than %99 ...”

Someone who can’t type! Or possibly can’t see that well. Or suffered a stroke. You don’t know the circumstances of the poster, so the criticism IS petty. And, for all you know, hurtful. The comments expressed are readily understood, but you have to focus on spelling/typing?

My husband has a four-digit IQ and a few degrees from very prestigious universities. He suffered a stroke 2 years ago, following which his typing skill declined and now includes misspellings that wouldn’t have occurred just a few short years ago. Big deal.

The ‘four digit IQ’ line is commonly used to refer to someone exceptionally bright. It’s clear you don’t run in those circles and have to pick on a poster whose spelling/typing you find inferior. If that’s what it takes to make you feel so intelligent and superior, go for it, pathetic as it may be.

For your own edification, it is past time to get out of your parents’ basement and on to the real world.

I can assure you no one with a high IQ says they have a “4 digit IQ”. Not even humorously.

Look madam... the poster BRAGGED how smart he/she while insulting the English language with grammatical errors. What was I to do? So I commented that for someone so bright his writing is atrocious.

True? True.

Yet, I never bragged that I was superior in any way. I merely pointed out the obvious foolhardy way the poster elevated his own stature on so SHAKY a platform.

True? True.

As for living in my parent’s basement I cannot since both are deceased. I do have my own fully furnished basement I could go sit in if that would suit you.
