After grad school in Hawaii, she returned to Indonesia in 1975. According to one story, Barry was offered the choice of remaining in Hawaii and attending high school there, or going to Indonesia. He chose to stay. Maya, who would have been 5 years old, went back to Indonesia, but returned to Hawaii to attend high school.
