ZOT! Michigan Firemen Setting Fires Over Union Anger
Publius Forum ^ | 05/02/10 | Warner Todd Huston

Why was this story not national news? Outrageously, firemen in Flint, Mich. went about the city setting fires instead of putting them out last month and all because their union wasn't happy with job layoffs. In a vain attempt to stop the layoffs, these union criminals went around setting fires to try and scare Flint's residents in order to goad them to tell city officials to rescind the layoffs.

Imagine the breach of trust that this represents between firemen and the citizenry? What next, will Flint policemen commit murders and armed robberies in like manner to the criminal activities of the union inflamed foremen of the city?

Is this where unions have taken the safety of our cities...

We’ve had a couple of firefighter/arsonists in Seattle, including a rather a notorious one who committed over 60 fires. He eluded police until four firefighters perished in a warehouse he had torched. He was caught and sentenced to 99 years. I know that there were many who thought that he deserved to “ride the lightening”.

I recall being one of them...

I have witnessed two vehicle fires being put out by firefighters.

Not only did they go berserk in putting out the fire on a Norton Commando motorcycle, they purposely destroyed anything that was NOT touched by the fire. They smashed with their axes all the glass, the headlight, both tires and used their water jet to push the bike down the road on its side. It was disgusting!

A pickup truck had rolled over on its side in the snow - not on fire, but that didn't stop the firefighters! They forced water into the gas tank, opened the hood and started chopping away! Destroyed the truck. They could have easily started a fire by shorting out the battery!

A good friend's brother was a ambulance driver - he told me a few stories about the dirty tricks that they got away with that would make you wonder, ‘why are they trusted so much’

These guys use their uniforms to give them power - if they are not tightly controlled, in a military fashion, they will take quickly advantage of their position.

Many third world countries don't even have to pay their policemen a living salary. Many bullies will actually pay the govt to work as a officer because the uniform and the ‘bakeesh’ or bribes will make them very rich.

Just like teachers fail to teach anything useful and our kids are dumb and that justifies ever increased spending.

California is what this country will look like after 4 years of Obama.

A couple of things: WHen you fight a vehicle fire, the first thing you need to do is cut the battery cables. I guess you can use an axe. I have never heard about water in the gas tank though. I only have a little firefighter experience.
Historically, during manpower reductions, if a rash of fires occur it usually is the responsibility of fire fighters. There is no proof that flint fire fighters started the fires, but they are definitely on my list as possible suspects.
The increase was about 10 fold during the 4-5 weeks after firefighters were laid off. They stopped immediatley after the city announced they got federal funds to rehire them for 2 years.

"I seriously despise unions now."

Yes. Making a clear distinction between the union leadership and their minions, and the rank-and-file membership.

I do understand that not all union members are bad.

For now though, I have thoroughly had it with SEIU and the teachers unions. They are true evil and giving unions a bad name.

“Michigan is what this country will look like after 8 years of Obama.”

Then you don’t really know much about Michigan as a whole. Once you get past the inner cities and union mentality (most employment is nonunion), Michigan is a beautiful state with some great people. I just wish we could turn the vote to red. The west side of the state is largely conservative, and there’s nothing wrong with Detroit and Flint that several days of carpet bombing wouldn’t fix. :)

Although I do not remember, I was born in Flint (but that was 53 years ago).

I do understand that not all union members are bad.

What's that saying? It is 99.99% of union members that give the other 0.01% a bad name.

I avoid buying anything union made if I can help it. Sadly I can't legally skip taxes so I cannot avoid financing unions entirely, but when it comes to discretionary purchases, I make sure to do business only with non-union companies and non-union suppliers.

It is more patriotic to buy something made in China than to buy anything made by a union in the USA.

if they don’t get their demands met, why they’ll burn the city to the ground.

There is nothing new under the sun. The later Roman Emperors had similar troubles with their Praetorian Guard.

Oh yeah? Well obviously it was a joke, but indeed Flint has changed a LOT in the last 25 years. Unfortunately the city was too highly dependent on Buick, and hit hard times just like Detroit with the automotive woes. But don’t try to tell the union folks that they were part of the problem...a lot of heads are still blissfully in the sand here.

This is about union power. Abolish the whole union. Any fireman willing to come back to work without the union still has a job. Oh, send the bill for fighting the arsons to the union and send the thugs to prison who actually set the fires.
_____________

Agreed! It’ll never happen — but agreed.

There is an undeniable link between the Midwest and East love of unions and the fact that it is now called the Rust Belt.

Probably because the title of the thread has nothing to do with the content of the article.
