Last December Joe Walsh, the primary winner for the GOP nomination for the 8th District Congressional seat, lost his campaign manager Keith Liscio. Liscio quit the Walsh campaign over unpaid consulting fees adding up into the thousands. Now two more top campaign operatives are quitting Walsh's campaign adding to worries of financial problems, missed filing dates for federal paper work, and other questions of Walsh's suitability for office.

Richard Cape and Ted Livengood, the campaign manager and field director respectively, have announced that they are quitting the Walsh campaign. In a recent email to supporters and media both the pair have also said they no longer endorse his candidacy. In the email are listed quite a few questions that have come to trouble Cape and Livengood about candidate Walsh...

I've been worried about this guy since before the primary.

The last thing we need is another con artist elected to office. There should consequences to people to who get elected in a primary by lying and hiding facts. This applies to both Obama as well as Walsh.

Let's make a bet? Which media outlet, if any, will do the homework necessary to investigate answers to those questions?

Dump Walsh now!

This seat is definitely up for the taking with a solid candidate. Walsh won the primary in Feb., so unless he steps down, IL is stuck with him.

The problem is that no Chicago media did any research on those questions until AFTER the stinkin’ primary! I wrote about some of these problems before the primary, but the media didn’t bother to do so. And now we are stuck with these sort of troubles.

I supported Maria Rodriguez in the primary (albeit with reservations due to her endorsement for Mark Kirk), because it appeared she had the best credentials to beat Melissa Bean. I still feel that way and I think she’d be a reliable conservative vote in Congress. I haven’t called for Joe Walsh to drop out, and I stood by him when the fallout began. But he’s getting more and more damaged to the point where it would be very difficult for him to win in November. If he does drop out, better sooner rather than later (we’re screwed when Republican candidates wait until a month or so before the November election to jump ship)

Rodriguez came in close third place finish (in a 6-way race) The runner up in the primary was Dirk Beveridge, so his supporters will probably make the case that he should get the nod if Rodriguez drops out. All three ran on solid conservative platforms. I never saw anything special about Beveridge that led me to believe voters would dump Bean in favor of him.

I agree that alot of the problems we're stuck with in the November election is due to our extremely early primary debate, and the media's failure to vet the candidates, leaving voters to nominate people that they didn't have enough background info. on.

Regarding Bill Brady, I agree that confusion over his last name may hurt him with some voters. There’s probably some people who confuse him with the Brady bunch gun grabbers. That’s why I always say Mark Kirk was endorsed by “Jim & Sarah Brady Campaign for Gun Control” rather just saying the Brady PAC. Many Illinois Republicans also mistakenly believe that Bill Brady is a relative of our RINO state party chairman, Pat Brady. They are completely unrelated, although Pat Brady IS a cousin to State. Rep. Dan Brady, a rival of Bill’s. I’m hopeful that one of the first things Bill Brady will do as Governor is appoint his own guy as state party chairman and get rid of Pat Brady.

What a mess. Is there any chance that Walsh will drop out?

I felt sick to my stomach last night when I heard this on the news.

He should be forced out ala Scott Lee Cohen. (who btw is running for Governor as an Independent).

We don’t need anyone special to beat Bean this year, any clean Republican could do it.

Maybe some local state legislator could be recruited. The political environment has changed vastly since the filing deadline.

AFAIK the local state legislative delegation isn’t exactly an embarrassment of riches.

Before the primary, Joe Walsh and Greg Jacobs told me that Rodriguez was the most liberal Republican, in that race. I think that State Senator Matt Murphy would be the best Republican, against Rep. Bean.

Could Matt Murphy be persuaded to run?

Yes, I think that Sen. Murphy could be persuaded to run. If Walsh drops out, I’ll email Murphy and ask him to run. I’d contact several party leaders, in that district, and ask them to ask him to run.
