No-Volunteering for Volunteer State

I am proud to be a resident in a state known as the Volunteer State. Tennessee picked up that moniker when during the war of 1812 Tennesseans volunteered far and above the average to go fight for our country. Since that date Tennesseans have always had a very high volunteer rate for wars, for humanitarian relief efforts, for anything that requires being a "bit neighborly." From Davey Crockett in the Alamo to Sergent Alvin York in World War I, Tennesseans have been heroic in their volunteering efforts to such an extent that the name has become synonymous with the state. We are proud of our service after all serving others is the Christian way. We have named our sporting teams thusly. Yet, sadly, no one seems to be taking much notice of the fact that middle Tennessee is calling out for help of its own at the moment.

“Sergent Alvin York in World War I, Tennesseans have been heroic in their volunteering efforts”. Alvin York was DRAFTED and did NOT “volunteer”.

If some organization is willing to pay my way there and for me to stay somewhere, I’d head down there.

Middle Tn. isn’t the only ones hurting. There are people here in the Memphis, Millington, Tipton County that have lost everything.

I’m in Nashville and I have to agree.

You’d think that 3 cable news-channels running 24 hours-a-day could give this flood some coverage, even with the oil spill and NYC terrorist attempt.

Nashville is devastated. Everyone I know is affected in varying degrees. The death count is rising. The two major tourism sites, downtown and Opryland, are seriously damaged and no one can guess when and if they’ll be operating again. The cresting river came within inches of knocking out Metro Water Services, serving 600,000 thousand people. Unknown numbers of residents have lost everything because they didn’t have flood insurance — couldn’t buy it because their homes weren’t considered to be in floodplains — and will have to start over.

Here on the gulf coast, which is bible belt and from where people often volunteer, there is hardly any news about this.

It’s all oil spill all the time, because that fits the MSM template. Even during the TS bomber conference they still have oil spill going on the news.

I thought Opryland closed a few years ago?

I’ve got a call in to my sib who’s an MD at Vanderbilt to see how my help would be best given.

Opryland the theme park closed. In it they built a mall and a HUGE and now very famous Gaylord Opryland Hotel and a new Grand Ole Opry theater. All are flooded.

Some areas are just storm racked, some are devastated. If you want to hear more, just listen live at the link above. The stories are heartbreaking.

Vandy area is OK, but some areas within 15miles of it are destroyed. Downtown is about 3 miles from Vandy and underwater with no power.

At least they are safe! Water is OK for now but they are begging everyone to conserve. Dont do laundry, car wash, water lawn, etc. Use the minimum,

Cumberland River is over 50’ and flooding is 40’. That is the river that runs right thru downtown.

PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD!
