This is how corrupt government officials turn ordinary, harmless citizens into "hardened" criminals. Truly beyond words. Sad to say, a traveler might actually be treated more fairly in Russia now. (for video click on red YouTube link top page)

This has been brewing for years, and inherent in the field of Law enforcement. Sadly, instead of being checked, by an aware and Patriotic public, we’ve allowed the guard dogs to morph into the wolves feeding off the flock. This has got to STOP, and NOW.

The guy sounds appalled that he and his wife weren’t racially profiled and let through without a hassle. I am too. I could tell by his voice alone that he was a white guy from Canada. Meaning....um....[checking my handy dandy pocket threat matrix]...white guy, wife, Canada....nope....not a threat.

(Hint: Pull over the Muslims from the middle east and Asia for further questions.)

Yep, and he said where they were going, the idiot “agent” got into a hissy fit because he wasn’t given a specific store name, which is not reasonable to ask given the previous dialogue. This wasn’t about danger, it was about an ego, and the “officer” being offended so he made this guy go through.

I’ve been in and out of customs about a dozen or so times in a few countries, and I have had only one or two U.S> agents treat me the way this guy/idiot/agent was. I was overly courteous not because that’s an appropriate exchange, but because it’s easier to be patient with them like the juveniles they are (not all agents, but these types). However, overtime we’ve abdicated more and more personal rights (these foreigners don’t have many here), but in general, so that these thugs think they’re all powerful. Sick and disgraceful.

There was no danger, except to the “officer”’s thin skin.

Sorry, but the BCE folks are in the right here, even if the first guy was a little too abrupt and curt.

This Canadian was deliberately trying to start a fight and make an issue. He got what he deserved. When you enter the USA, you play by our rules and you answer the questions without the attitude and the smart-ass responses. If you think these guys were nasty to him, you should try that with the Canadians when entering their country.

These guys are trying to protect our country. If you think their job is to be a Welcome Wagon for Canadian a$$holes, spend a day with them at the border and see what crap they have to put up with.

The good news here is that this guy and his wife are now on the list and will be denied entry into the United States from now on. Good riddance to them. Maybe their story will straighten out other Canadians coming here with a chip on their shoulders.

Dang.
I think at that point I’d demand to either be arrested-&-charged or let go; I’ll be honest, the ‘detained’ status where you’re in legal limbo scares the hell outta me.

I did just want to add that the guy being interviewed would have been better served to just answer the questions, and move on. Instead of arguing. He would have probaby been in and out rather than dealing further with the first idiot in the first place. And I’d say, in any event, shop in your own country and you wouldn’t have a problem.

And the “Obstruction of Justice” charge is so over abused, it’s stupid.

Yeah, and what about the “pulling away is assault” charge after his wife pulled away when they grabbed her? This is such BS and must be stopped.

Bingo. People wrongly think this starts and ends here. It’s not just going to be foreign “terrorists,” when they stop coming to our country, and probably even before, the Admin will ‘sic ‘em on us...

I’ve been through Customs in a lot of countries throughout Europe and back to the US. The US and UK customs people were by far the worst.

Since when did we start imposing civil/criminal punishments without a trial? I'm pretty sure the Sixth amendment has something to say about that.
Since when did we start inflicting de facto exile/banishment for getting into an argument with the police? I'm pretty sure the Eighth amendment has something to say about that.

I certainly didn't spend 9 years in the Army to allow the police/border-patrol to ignore the Constitution I swore to defend.

While I agree with oldbill on “if you’re going to come to America, you have to abide by our rules” mentality, the problem is that people aren’t abiding rules. And pulling one’s arm away is not “Assault” on an officer, which should not carry any greater charge than assault period. It would in fact be resisting arrest, unless they weren’t actually arresting him.

The problem is there is a buffet of charges available for infliction upon anyone these days because of a lax mentality among the people.public. We are to keep these people in line, primarily through appropriate elections and civil (public, not courteous) interaction, not the other way around. Officers have both too much discretion and too much power. Either we are a nation of laws, or we are a nation of despots, great and small. Sadly, we’ve almost completed our transition to the latter.

Seems to me this guy was offered plenty of chances to calm down and kept mouthing off. Getting sent to secondary is not uncommon. It's happened to me coming and going.

I had one Canadian Customs Officer ask me if I was trying to move to Canada because I had too much stuff in my car. It doesn't have to be a big deal.

I addressed that too in my post, while you were writing yours. Pulling away is definitely NOT assault. I wish things were back to “normal,” but that’s been at least 150 years ago.

I have hope this will change, but I fear the way it may have to.

You are absolutely correct. The man would have been best served by not rocking the boat. The problem is that it’ll get worse and worse. If you see the big picture, we’re required, for example, to remove our shoes, and TSA (I know this isn’t TSA) shake down old women/children (want to cavity search) regularly, but terrorists (Undie bomber), etc. get a free pass.

The problem is that the guard dogs have become wolves, and when they can’t get in their ego fixes in, they’ll come for you. This is just a micro incident of a systemic (macro) problem. Cheers...
