... why not tell BP they’ve got 30 days - then the well becomes US property.

Why let BP off the hook? They should keep it and take care of the problem ... :-)

If the U.S. owns it, then the U.S. taxpayers get the bill for taking care of the problem.

The US is going to get the cost of clean-up no matter what. The spill has caused untold millions of dollars of damage to small busines owners in the Gulf, and whether we feel it directly as fishermen, or indirectly as clean-up crews, our tax dollars are hard at work paying for the ineptitude of BP.

And this is not the first of such disasters.

If we clean it up, BP can write up the losses in revenue no matter what. They drill offshore...over three miles out. International waters.
