What kind of holes you ask? Boy howdy, try holes in really thick steel, such as, um, railroad track. No kidding, see for yourself.
I know not what size cartridge they use to do this, but I doubt it is a .22!

Those .22lr blanks pack a punch. They’re also available in .27 caliber. I love using a hilti gun to shoot nails through concrete and steel. It’s amazing how much power a little power can muster.

Years ago we used to use .38’s to shoot a spike through .375 inch steel plates then concrete. Not too fast but better then drilling.

Hitting it with the hammer is ‘pulling the trigger.’

A quick search found a closed listing for blanks for one of the machines, listed as .45-70 at Auction Arms.

I don’t think they had a mic at the scene. Blanks aren’t black powder.

OK I think you’ve sized it up correctly (no sound, no smoke). It amazes me that such a small device can blow such a clean hole in that thick steel.

Pretty slick!
I used the “closed caption” option youtube is experimenting with. Some pretty odd results. LMAO!

If you have ever use a Ramset you will understand how it works. The sound was probably muted on the tape, but it would not have been very loud in any case.
From the animation, the smoke and blast would be entirely contained inside the chamber.

Well, that would make it stronger than a pistol cartridge but weaker than a 30-30. Cup pressures for Trap-Door Springfield are 21,000 and Lever Action 28,000. I think bolt action might get as high as 38,000 ---about the same as a 30-30.
