INDIAN OCEAN - Sixteen-year-old American Abby Sunderland, a "born again" teenage girl attempting to sail solo around the world, was rescued on Saturday, June 12, 2010
in a remote spot of the Indian Ocean, bringing to a successful conclusion the dramatic bid to save her life.
Abby, who is part of a Southern California Christian family, was picked up from her stricken vessel by a dinghy launched from the French fishing boat Ile de la Reunion.

Abby....as a sailor myself, I can say your one tough kid. Don’t let the naysayers grind you down.
Am I the only one who has a problem with this?
If I was in their situation, I’d make some sort of charitable donation.
Three suggestions.
The Australian Volunteer Coastguard for the obvious link to sea rescue in Australia.
CanTeen - The Australian Organisation for Young People Living with Cancer - a charity with a youth focus supported by Qantas who provided the aircraft that responded.
Société Nationale de Sauvetage en Mer. A French volunteer organisation that rescues those in peril around the French coast, in recognition of the sailors who picked her up.
I don’t think they should be billed. That’s not our rescue at sea works - but a donation would go some way to showing their gratitude.
No, I have a problem with it as well. They may have prayed about it, but I have serious doubts that they then listened to what God had to say.

I posted this on another thread, but I think it clarifies what they were doing:
“I don’t sail. I live in southern Arizona, about 60 miles from the border.
Suppose I encouraged my 12 year old daughter to hike the Arizona/Mexico border alone to set a record as the youngest girl to hike the border alone. And had her do it in summer, because winter would be too late to set the record. And plug a reality TV show about her hike, and my worrying about her.”
The “naysayers” would be pointing out the STUPIDITY of my STUNT. No matter how tough my daughter is, or how much hiking, doing that would be STUPID. And stupid isn’t admirable...
It is possible to pray and then to hear what you want to hear in ‘response’. It’s a form of self-deception.
Lies I tell ya! This little girl should be strapped into a child seat in the back seat of mamas car....Bad mama!
For that matter, Kids up to 17 years old should be forced to ride in child protective seats designed for teenagers.
Abby's father, Laurence Sunderland said, In this day and age we get overprotective with our children. Look at how many teenagers die in cars every year. Should we let teenagers drive cars?

If more teens had the ‘nads this girl has and more parents encouraged them to follow their dreams like these did, I suspect we’d have a much brighter future.
Foolish comment. Most teen driving accidents come from immaturity and a willingness to take excessive risks for emotional highs, not from lack of training. The immaturity go with the territory (youthfulness) and there’s nothing you can do about it except wait a few years.
The parents will have their faith “strengthened” due to the fact that Abby was saved.
But does that mean that this was God’s will to begin with?
IMO the fact that God bailed them out does not mean that this journey was God’s idea.
I'm hearing this morning (FOX and then a radio report) that Daddy had signed a reality TV gig thing previously......we may have a variant of Balloon Boy goin' on here.

These parents are lower than whale poop. I wish the authority that recognizes records in sailing would make the boat put up bond for any cost related to rescue or admin expense for a country. Plus require 18 years old as the entry level.
I am so frosted about this. Sending your kid to her potential death is child abuse in the first degree. The kid failed, was behind schedule, put in for repairs and was then advised by her father to continue the march.
Put those parents in a Dingy in the middle of the Southern Ocean in Winter. Let's see what hero's they are. That girl was facing weather worse that what crashed her for the next two months.
Honor the rescuers. The fishing boat crew that got her lost production, and the captain, almost his life. Fell into the water. I'm hot about this.
