Jail Time Proposed for Parents Who Miss Parent-Teacher Conferences
Nanny State Liberation Front ^ | NSLF

A Detroit, Mich. prosecutor is threatening parents with jail time if they do not make it to at least one parent-teacher conference annually. Meanwhile, the Detroit Public Schools system is [ http://www.myfoxdetroit.com/dpp/news/local/Parent-Teacher-Conference-Rule-Proposed-20100614-ms ]bribing parents with $25 gift cards to Target for providing up-to-date student information upon enrollment.

Treating parents like children with a punishment and reward method of discipline should be seen as an “incentive to encourage those responsible to take and active interest in their children’s education,” explained Wayne County Prosecutor Kym L. Worth in a June 14 [ http://www.co.wayne.mi.us/mygovt/prosecutor/docs/2010%20June%2014%20-%20Statement%20Parent%20Ordinance.pdf ]press release. “We should not have to legislate this, but what we have been doing is not working.”

According to Worth, Detroit school kids are becoming increasingly more prone to criminal behavior, so this “last resort” effort to force parents in to attending parent-teacher conferences should somehow control their children’s’ propensity towards crime. Yea, it doesn’t quite make any sense, especially considering that locking parents up in jail will only serve to ...

just another reason to home school. that way, if you have to work late some night, you won’t have to worry about your wife throwing you in jail (at least not ‘real’ jail)

“A Detroit, Mich. prosecutor”

Detroit? Maybe if he checked the jail, he’d find a bunch of the “parents” there already....

Wait a second. I thought jails were letter the bad guys out early because they didn’t have room to put them up.

So how come they’re coming around with this idea of putting law abiding citizens in jail for missing a parent teacher conference. I’d like to see the penal code on that one. When did it become illegal.

And while we’re talking about illegal activities, what about all those illegals who wander across the Sanoran Desert. At the very least, they ought to get a ticket for litering. That is, if they’re ever allowed back into the United States. I mean, what kind of citizens do they think they’d make if they are littering.

I’m trying to form a mental picture of a parent:

1) who had not previously been attending at least one parent-teacher conference a year, and

2) who would start attending in response to a threat of jail, and

3) whose involvement in their child’s education would have even the slightest positive effect.

No luck yet. Can anybody else help me out on this?

Heck, it they just required parents that are unemployed, on welfare, in jail, or government workers to show up, they would have at least a 92% attendance figure! lol

my father never went to parent teacher conferences. there was an open house kind of thing when we first moved there, but that was it.

he ran the business and would go to work @ 7am and get home between 7-9pm... 9a-4p on sat.

if there was a school thing to be attended to, my mom would deal with it. of course, my sister and I were good students, I was in all honors classes.

I’m fairly certain, my father sacrificing the business to listen to some lib pattle on would not have helped my education one bit. and a threat of jail time would have just encouraged us to move to a different school district.

The is the success of the Teachers Unions turning people’s attention away from their responiblity for the terrible state of public schools and shifting blame onto parents and kids (families). They have made great “progress” in this area...jail ‘em.
