A bridge too far?
The American Thinker ^ | June 22, 2010 | Christopher Chantrill

According to Fred Barnes at The Weekly Standard, the Obamis are planning a lame-duck session of Congress, "filled with defeated and retired senators and House members," to pass a VAT (value-added tax).

Liberals know that they get a chance to enact progressive legislation only once in a generation. That's when the cycle of politics throws up a liberal majority in Congress, and liberals have the votes to cram down their agenda. That's why President Obama is in such a hurry, eager to jam down liberal legislation in the teeth of popular opposition.

I call it the ratchet.

In the 1900s, liberals got to do a ratchet on popular election of senators, the income tax, and central banking. They got to do a ratchet on financial regulation, pro-labor legislation, Social Security, and welfare in the 1930s. Only the NRA wage and price controls got repealed. They got to do civil rights and ratchet the war on poverty and environment in the 1960s. Only one welfare program out of 79 got repealed -- thirty years later. And now, after a forty-year hiatus, liberals are hoping to ratchet ObamaCare and a huge expansion of the stealth welfare state onto the American people.

Obviously, as President Obama and Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid rush to jam their agenda through this year, and as they plan for a lame-duck session after the election to pass the VAT, they are assuming that the 20th-century liberal ratchet still applies. Voters will want to keep their new entitlements. The extreme right wing will never be able to take them away.

But maybe the lame-duck session will be a bridge too far.

If they try this perhaps the lame ducks should be physical impeded from getting to the chambers to vote.

Unfortunately I think this is quite possible. If the government refuses to listen to the people, the protests will make the 60’s antiwar rallies look like a Sunday church picnic.

Hard to believe things have gotten this bad.

"Unfortunately I think this is quite possible."

It would still require the Dems that are elected or not up for election in the Senate to go along with this.

“Unfortunately I think this is quite possible.”

It would still require the Dems that are (re-)elected or not up for election in the Senate to go along with this.

The Lame Ducks might consider the greeting they receive when they return home.

Once the lame ducks loose what do they have to fear from Pelosi or Reid? Particularly if they loose their elections
and or positions.

A VAT will pretty well destroy the walmarts kmarts, target stores, dollar stores, Best Buy stores, Radio Shack, Auto Zone etc. you name it. People will buy ONLY what they absolutely have. On top of this you will have energy taxes, cap and trade, a doubling of your power bills,,,,socialism is a permanent depression.

I truly wish but I doubt anything will happen and here is why:

1-There are too many conservatives and other citizens who have given in to the idea that physical resistance is wrong and out of context with our form of government (which is wrong in itself).

2-The Government has successfully divided us to the point where they can easily handle dissenters by surrounding them (literally) individually and then either arresting them or killing them and calling them terrorists.

3-Number 2 can easily be accomplished because the entire press, including Fox News, would not cover this to make sure people do not get angry and reinstall the Constitution. Fox News would not show it because they seem to not be educated enough and when push comes to shove they will not support our Country. They go to the edge but always back off when a gut check is required.

Without a free press to transmit government excess and the new communism people do not have the ability to correct the Government and stop it from usurping the Constitution.

The ‘Rats lack of a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate may be our only insulation.

Will it hold? I think it might.

I believe they will try to do amnesty this way. That is the only thing that will solidify their power. Everything else can be done once they have 10 million "new" voters.

The VAT and cap and trade can be rescinded by a Republican congress while there is not a chance in hell that amnesty could or would be overturned.

I was actually pleasantly surprised that they did not try that right out of the box rather than healthcare.

Every Republican (and Democrat) running for Federal office this Fall should be asked to sign a pledge to repeal Obamacare and everything else that has been approved under this administration. After we clear that wreckage, then we need to agitate with our representatives to start dismantling things such as the Energy and Education departments. Time to scrape the crud off the body politic.

Well it seems you are either for the party or for your country. I wonder which way the Dems will jump? One thought that maybe would sober them up would be the idea that they and their family are no longer welcomed in their home state and precincts. Not to be too “weathermanish” but violence against the pigs is always a possibility. Just ask Bill Ayers and his skanky wife. I am pretty sure Obama would understand such viseral speech by a un-represented minority (read taxpayers). Social justice baby, bring it on. Lets punish the running dogs of socialism.
