If General McChrystal is guilty of anything it is being gullible enough to believe that allowing a journalist from a left leaning publication was a good idea. One of the things I learned during Desert Storm was that journalists do a good job cozying up to GI’s and making them feel important. After all, everyone wants their 15 minutes of fame.
None of the quotes that everyone is up-in-arms about is directly attributable to General McChrystal but his error was thinking that this journalist was going to paint his team and the military in a positive light.

I think McChrystal is guilty of more than naivete - the article was sent to him in advance and he approved it. One could call that a lapse of judgment, but I doubt it. I think he knew just what he was doing. Now it’s Petraeus who will have the albatross of Afghanistan hung around his neck. Obama certainly would never have taken the responsibility for the failure to come.
It’s hilarious to read the lefties’ praise of Petraeus, who just a short time ago was called a liar and General Betrayus.
One last comment - if McChrystal, indeed, is the author of the ridiculous ROE in use in Afghanistan, he is guilty of that lapse, as well. If the ROE were dependent upon a much higher troop strength, then he should have waited until the strength was in place. He should have known what kind of military-hating weasel he was dealing with.
These ROE's were not his, but Obombus! Lets win this war!!, but don't hurt anyone doing it...spit!

Now that McCrystal has resigned, I wonder how many more of our military men and women will resign or retire soon? I guess we will never know, but I’m sure many are thinking about it.

McChrystal did this on purpose; for a reason to resign. Afghan is going back to hell when Obama starts pulling out troops in a year and he won't be the one holding THAT bag.

You could be right, he may have been looking for an excuse to step down. I had the exact same thought on General Patraeus taking over. Not long ago he was the devil which is what most on the left think of those who serve their country. Hopefully in 2 years and change the nightmare will be over...
Thanks for sharing that link. We had similar rules at points during desert storm. In fact I have pictures I took of us chasing an Iraqi armored personell carrier and while I was waiting for some REMF (rear echelon MF) to make a decision, an apache pilot lit his ass up. Scared me to death until I looked back over my shoulder.
Todd, your excerpt doesn’t make a whole lot of sense (they never do, which is why we hate them and only use them when required per the excerpt-only list). Since it’s your own column (I assume), can you just post the whole thing so we have some context? I think it will drive more traffic to your site in the long run, plus it won’t make you seem like you’re just here for the hits, but rather to educate and elucidate. Thanks!

One of the remarks people are upset at is: when the president met with a dozen senior military officials in a room at the Pentagon known as the Tank. According to sources familiar with the meeting, McChrystal thought Obama looked “uncomfortable and intimidated” by the roomful of military brass.
Having served in the military for five years, I do not doubt that this statement is true. I have had the opportunity to meet many politicians and none of them carry the aura that high ranking military men do, period. Again the general’s team was naïve and should have never made this remark to the media.
Trust me; President Obama is being criticized at every level of the military; from lower ranking enlisted men to the highest ranks in the officer corps. How do I know this? From my own experience and the fact that soldiers are world class complainers. There’s also the little fact that according to a Military Times poll only 8% of the armed forces consider themselves liberal. Fortunately conservatives continue to defend their rights and protect their freedom.
The other part of the Rolling Stone article that has drawn fire is another statement from someone on the general’s staff. Their first one-on-one meeting took place in the Oval Office four months later, after McChrystal got the Afghanistan job, and it didn’t go much better. “It was a 10-minute photo op,” says an adviser to McChrystal. “Obama clearly didn’t know anything about him, who he was. Here’s the guy who’s going to run his f’ing war, but he didn’t seem very engaged. The Boss was pretty disappointed.”
Again this statement shouldn’t have been made to the media, however, I can certainly understand the general’s angst at having his time wasted. Probably the number on complaint of soldiers is about time being wasted, the old adage of hurry up and wait.
Undoubtedly President Obama wanted to look like he’s making a stand on National defense. What looks more presidential than conferring with generals? Of course everyone knows he’s just playing tough. I agree general McChrystal should step down and that this was a serious lapse in judgment on his part.

Okay, your article looks a bit rushed and could have used some editing, but I get the point. The General was gullible. I think that has been long established, though, when he voted for 0. (At least that’s what I’ve heard; correct me if I’m wrong).
McChrystal is not going to be the general to lose the effort and the war now. Petraeus will also resign if he doesn’t get what he needs.
If I were Petraeus, I’ll resign by Christmas if I don’t get what I need.

And yes, according to the Rolling Stone article General McChrystal did indeed vote for Obama. I was quite suprised when I read this given his background as a special forces operator. There aren’t many liberals in that walk of life.
