The toxic chemical dispersant Corexit 9500 was pumped into the Gulf to counter the oil spill. Now it appears to have gassified, entered the atmosphere, and rained down on inland farmers, damaging crops and killing songbirds:
One month ago, on May 24, The European Union Times wrote about a report prepared by Russia's Ministry of Natural Resources for President Medvedev -- Toxic Oil Spill Rains Warned Could Destroy North America:
A dire report prepared for President Medvedev by Russia's Ministry of Natural Resources is warning ... that the British Petroleum (BP) oil and gas leak in the Gulf of Mexico is about to become the worst environmental catastrophe in all of human history threatening the entire eastern half of the North American continent with "total destruction".By June 10 the San Fransico Chronicle reported crop damage -- BP oil spill Corexit dispersants suspected in widespread crop damage:Russian scientists are basing their apocalyptic destruction assessment due to BP's use of millions of gallons of the chemical dispersal agent known as Corexit 9500 which is being pumped directly into the leak of this wellhead over a mile under the Gulf of Mexico waters and designed, this report says, to keep hidden from the American public the full, and tragic, extent of this leak that is now estimated to be over 2.9 million gallons a day.
The dispersal agent Corexit 9500 is a solvent originally developed by Exxon and now manufactured by the Nalco Holding Company of Naperville, Illinois that is four times more toxic than oil....
A greater danger involving Corexit 9500, and as outlined by Russian scientists in this report, is that with its 2.61ppm toxicity level, and when combined with the heating Gulf of Mexico waters, its molecules will be able to "phase transition" from their present liquid to a gaseous state allowing them to be absorbed into clouds and allowing their release as "toxic rain" upon all of Eastern North America.
Even worse, should a Katrina like tropical hurricane form in the Gulf of Mexico while tens of millions of gallons of Corexit 9500 are sitting on, or near, its surface the resulting "toxic rain" falling upon the North American continent could "theoretically" destroy all microbial life to any depth it reaches resulting in an "unimaginable environmental catastrophe" destroying all life forms from the "bottom of the evolutionary chart to the top"....
....It seems like damage brought by the oil gusher has spread way beyond the ocean, coastal areas and beaches. Collateral damage now appears to include agricultural damage way inland Mississippi.The warning on the Corexit 9500 label is clear enough:A mysterious "disease" has caused widespread damage to plants from weeds to farmed organic and conventionally grown crops. There is very strong suspicion that ocean winds have blown Corexit aerosol plumes or droplets and that dispersants have caused the unexplained widespread damage or "disease"....
"Keep container tightly closed. Do not get in eyes, on skin, on clothing. Do not take internally. Avoid breathing vapor. Use with adequate ventilation. In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice. After contact with skin, wash immediately with plenty of soap and water. Wear suitable protective clothing."Now the stuff is raining down on us!
It has been well-known in the oil industry since the 1980s that oil-eating microbes can clean up the oil with no lasting environmental impact. They were developed at the behest of the Texas Land Office and the Texas Water Commission, and used successfully in 1990 to clean up a large oil spill in Galveston (see Business Insider -- An Oil-Eating Microbe That's Been Around Since 1989 Could Single-Handedly Clean Up BP's Entire Oil Spill).
There is big money and even bigger players in this scam. While they are letting the oil blow wide open into the Gulf, the stakes and profit rise.By now an outraged public has become aware of the microbes, which were warehoused in large quantities and available for use in the Gulf. But it is too late to use them now that Corexit has depleted the oxygen in the water. The microbes need oxygen to live long enough to eat the oil.The Dolphins, Whales, Manatees, Sea Turtles and fish suffocate and die. The coastal regions, salt marshes, tourist attractions and the shore front properties are being destroyed, possibly permanently. The air quality is diminished. The Gulf of Mexico fishing industry is decimated.
All to create a need for their expensive and extremely profitable poison.
The European Union Times report sums it up best:
...the greatest lesson to be learned by these Americans is that their government-oil industry cabal has been just as destructive to them as their government-banking one, both of which have done more to destroy the United States these past couple of years than any foreign enemy could dare dream was possible.But to their greatest enemy the Americans need look no further than their nearest mirror as they are the ones who allowed these monsters to rule over them in the first place.

My first thoughts after reading this was what I heard Glen Beck say the other day..He admonished to watch for drastic moves by this administration because of the falling poll numbers..Part of that plan might be to scare this population into submission with something beyond the failed global warming push of the past few years. While we need to protect our planet the best we can, we also need to understand that there are those very, very rich people out there, some not even citizens of our own nation, who would be happy to form an unholy alliance to take over the whole world. What do you do when you are totally bored with all the material wealth money can buy?..Why, you try to dominate and enslave the human spirit out of your envy of God. We are in very dangerous times and not primarily from the oil spill. As always, it is human evil which will get us in the end.
Reasonable observation. However, the Corexit is separating the oil into its constituent parts, harming both the ocean and the air. It acts like a poor refinery. Instead of crude oil that rises and cane be skimmed off the top of the sea, one gets, the various chemicals such as pentane, heptane, octane, etc. More stays down in the various levels of the sea and (perhaps) more some rises into the air.
According to a great many experts, this Corexit path is doing much more harm than good, compared to other options.
Consider this an alert about the possibility of big problems in the air/rain. Big problems in the sea are a given, and have been guaranteed to be much, much worse than had the massive skimming, suction, absorption, and bacteriological digestion methods that people from all over the world have been trying to get Obama administration to adopt.

At the very least they have decided to pursue a path that minimizes short term negatives (visible oil slicks). This is accomplished by maximizing the long term negatives (corexit fallout). Looks like they are only worried about the effects this spill has on the upcoming November elections.
I do believe you are right. This dispersant is used solely for show and tell, questionable people are making a huge profit at the risk of millions living near the Gulf.
I really honestly hate saying this and I do deserve any criticism but I am again truly glad I live in Alaska.

Well, it rather depends on what the Corexit is doing to the oil. There’s a nifty site that discusses Corexit, and how it works, which might interest you.

Now mind you,this site has a mix of academics and practitioners, which always leads to interesting discussions. Such conversations also tend to cut through the media driven BS that all too often clouds the reality of environmental problems. Transparency can be really refreshing.
I’ll warn you that some of this stuff will make your eyes cross, and reflects some uncerainty on the part of the tech community. That’s ok though, as knowing what we don’t know helps to target the enquiry. The particular variety of Conexit used in the Gulf is a bit light in the formulation area. It is reputed to have some strong surfactants (detergents), but that needs to be elaborated on before a real discussion can proceed on it. I’m sure the formulation will become available, but from the literature I was able to acquire, some of the contents are still proprietary.
If the surfactant effect is significant, it’s going to be putting a lot of this oil into solution, much as the cooking oils in your kitchen sink. That would tend to keep the oil away form the surface in the first place.
Like most natural/unnatural systems, the variables can confound those seeking easy answers. Be very careful about buying into simple environmental theories about the situation at an early stage. Right now, the Ludite environmental opportunists are regurgitating whatever comes into their technically feeble brains. For good or ill, accurate environmental answers are not going to come for a long time. Right now you’re seeing PC-PR spin thats only produced by organizations trying to push particular agendas that have little to do with reality. In months, or years, we’ll actually know some of the answers as to how Corexit works in this particular environment. Those who profess to know the answers at this early stage are not to be trusted, but it is interesting to pick apart their agenda driven mantras that are trying to pass off as scientific knowledge.
Been to the Oil Drum. Just too busy to read all the threads that deal with this spill. And yes the various political groups will be coming to the situation from their perspectives. At any rate, since the formulation is proprietary, we can only guess at this point in time.

Corexit is not an evaporative agent, it biodegrades, it isn’t getting into the atmosphere, even when sprayed from above it has a very low travel distance (about 2000 feet in a 30 mph wind).
It’s also not all that toxic, it is made up materials all of which you can find in common household products, including cleaners and body lotions.
And they haven’t sprayed enough that it could, if dispersed, spread enough to cause widespread disaster, even it it was actually highly toxic AND could be evaporated and didn’t biodegrade.
FR is just being too inundated with all this crap from the environmentalist whacko movement. We might as well become shills for cap and trade.

If a product doesn't tell you to do a 15-minute rinse and seek medical advice for skin contact, it's not really hazardous. You'll find this warning on your formula 409 that you spray all over your kitchen.
You should see the warning on the chlorine bottle they pour into the pool you swim in every day.
They didn't. The EPA asked them about this, and BP responded, and the EPA agreed with the response.
Yep, and yet we actually SWIM in those chemicals.
