My 8GB SDHC card recived a small bit of damage on an exposed corner, opposite of the leads. The computer won't read the card so my data is trapped. I have a ton of music on it so I'm anxious to recover my tunes. Any ideas as to how I can recover the data?
Yes I know, I used the hard drive comparison to show how expensive it can get.
The suggestion to flex the card seems reasonable. Worth a try and probably wouldnt cause any more damage if done carefully.
Yes! Verified. This is what he has, except for the missing fragment in the lower right corner.
BTW, carbonite or a similar online backup service comes in handy. You don’t have to remember to back up anything. It does it automatically whenver you connect to the internet.
I’ve had to use it a couple times and it worked like a champ.

Yeah.. I’ve used that technique a few times. Even on hard drives that suddenly wouldn’t read anymore.
On a hard drive tho, it’s usually the connector pins that are the problem.
I never take SD cards out of my cameras and generally transfer the files to a PC shortly after taking them.
You can’t have too many backups of critical data. I had an external mirrored drive I used for backups. Seagate downloaded an update which turned it into a brick.
That ‘missing fragment’ might be part of the circuit board.
If that’s the case, then you may not be able to recover anything from it, but someone may be able to open it up and check to see if it’s just a matter of replacing missing ‘traces’ on the board.
If it’s just missing part of the ‘case’ then try the flex trick. It might work.
I have a SD reader and use it all the time.
I have so many backups of the files (and pictures) I end up with a lot of redundancy!
I even transfer them to my wifes computer through my ‘network’.
Just in case!
:)
The data can most likely be recovered. He may need to send it to a lab though. Which may be cost prohibitive.
More than likely, it’s going to end up being the only way to recover it.
Toss it. Get a new one. Download your music from you backups. Stop bothering us. :)
Freep mail me a list of your songs and your address. I am sure that we can get you a card and the music. Short of an airplane ride I cannot get your photos back. Thanks for your service.
Bonus! Get your music back AND flip Sony the bird!
My beard is gray enough to have recovered a hard drive with the old freezer trick once. Frankly, I couldn't believe it worked, but it did.
I haven't had luck in more recent cases, and I thought it was no longer used, but I see from a search that it still seems to work sometimes.
