he used the venue of the State of the Union address early in the year to publicly flog the Court over its ruling that the First Amendment grants the right to various organizations to run political ads during the time of an election.

The First Amendment does not "grant" anything. It protects rights. Rights come from Nature's God, not from the Constitution.

It does say, "the people have the right..", it says "Congress shall make no law.." Just like the Second Amendment, which does not say "the people shall have the right to keep and bear arms", rather is says "..the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed".

How does adherence to the constitution become a ‘smack down’.

Because it's the function of the Supreme Court to "smack down" attempts to violate the Constitution. Whoever is doing the violating gets "smacked down".
