Chapter 11 - CIC and the Media: Another clash of CI and CIC

Are you old enough to remember the First Gulf War in 1991? If so, you will recall that we watched it on television … thanks to CNN, the first global CIC-Media.
During the Gulf War, President George H. W. Bush watched CNN. Saddam Hussein watched CNN. I suspect even the CIA watched CNN. Because CNN was right there, right from the start, and often was the best source about what was happening … right now.
We got to know the networks’ reporters – Bernard Shaw, Bob Simon, Arthur Kent (the Scud Stud), Peter Arnett, Christiane Amanpour, Forrest Sawyer, Wolf Blitzer, Chris Wallace, Peter Jennings, Ted Koppel We even ducked when they ducked, as a Scud Missile passed by.
CNN, in particular was the Messenger with exactly the right Message to match our self-interests. By the end of the 43-day War, CNN had become, at that time, THE premier global news channel.
Good job, CNN!
CIC-Correspondents, such a Christiane Amanpour, Anderson Cooper, Wolf Blitzer, and Campbell Brown carried on this tradition.

Something was different about Fox. Somehow it had more CIC. There were some who passed it off and said that Fox appealed only to conservatives and Republicans. For example, here is an article from 2006:
“Alex Koppelman offered an encouraging report late yesterday on the state of Fox News ratings.. I’ll give you a hint: they’re going in the wrong direction. Somewhere, Keith Olbermann is sticking pins in a Bill O’Reilly voodoo doll: Fox News’ ratings, TVNewser reports, are down since August of last year. Like, way down. Like down 28 percent in primetime among all viewers, down 20 percent in primetime in the “money demo” (viewers aged 25-54) and down 7 percent in daytime viewership overall. In fact, the only place Fox is up is during the day, when they managed a ratings increase of just 2 percent, and even then only in the money demo. And lest you think this is an industry-wide trend, consider this: over the same time period, CNN and MSNBC are up. This is very much in line with what we learned in June, when Broadcasting & Cable, a trade publication for the TV industry, reported that Fox News’ ratings are “dropping precipitously.”
About two years ago, Matt Yglesias described FNC pretty well. “Fox is not biased or even opinionated — it certainly isn’t ideological,” Yglesias said “It’s an arm of the Republican Party, a group of vicious hatchet-men leavened by occasional doses of Alan Colmes, David Corn, and Jim Pinkerton.” With this in mind, perhaps Fox News’ deteriorating ratings are a reflection of the GOP’s weakening position. source: www.thecarpetbaggerreport.com/archives/8333.html -
Was that true? Before we fast forward to 2009, compare this article with the one you just read. I guess the old addage is true, "Don't believe everything you read!"

So far during the second quarter, the No. 1 cable news channel’s primetime schedule has dropped 22% in its core 25-54 demo and 8% in total viewers. The first quarter was even worse.

These dominating ratings beg the question; why do liberals hate Fox News so much? I could recall some liberals predicting the Fox News domination would come to an end when Barack Obama became President, but boy were they wrong. Fox News’s ratings have soared under the new administration, much in part due to the addition of Glenn Beck at the 5pm slot. ‘Glenn Beck’ has soared to the #3 slot with 2.2 million since debuting on Fox News on January 19th. As a matter of fact ALL Fox News programs have seen an increase in viewership since President Obama took office. Liberals hate Fox News due to the number of conservative commentators on the air, the dominant ratings, and the fact Fox News isn’t biased towards liberals like every other network.
A few weeks ago I wrote a paper on the importance of honest journalism in the United States. I noted that journalism all but died in 2008 with the death of the late, great Tim Russert. Tim Russert, a Democrat, was a straight shooter and didn’t pander to one party or the other. He told it like it was; which is how every journalist should approach their work. Sadly, few do.
Liberals cannot stand the likes of Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck, or Bill O’Reilly on their screens speaking out against President Obama. Even though Bill O’Reilly is more of an independent minded thinker in my eyes, he is mocked by the likes of Keith Olbermann and other liberals for speaking out against Obama. I laugh when I hear them attack O’Reilly, because he is nowhere near as harsh on Obama like Beck and Hannity are. One thing you got to realize is this: These three men are commentators, not reporters! There is a staunch difference between those two terms; perhaps liberals should grab a dictionary and take note. Conservatives hate NBC and CNN for reporters like Brian Williams, Andrea Mitchell, and Rick Sanchez for being biased in their reporting!
Another reason liberals hate Fox News is because of their ratings dominance. Fox News averages more viewers than MSNBC and CNN combined! Liberals like to say that there are 300 million Americans, therefore it’s not hard to find 2 million idiots to watch biased reporting. Got to love their reasoning; not! I think it’s pretty sad that is the only reason liberals have for the Fox News dominance. Thank God for the unbiased reporting of the Nielsen’s. Numbers never lie!
The final reason liberals hate Fox News is because Fox is not biased towards the left like NBC, CNN, CBS, ABC, and the New York Times. Fox News is really more of a centrist network in their reporting, but they get the ‘bad’ wrap, if you want to call it that, as a biased network because they are more right on the political spectrum when compared to the networks listed in the first sentence. For the past few decades those networks/newspapers have never had to deal with a network that gave conservatives a fair shake until now. And as the ratings show, they are struggling to compete.
The bottom line is this: Fox News is the most dominant cable news network on television right now. If liberals felt so strongly against it, then they should simply not watch it. I am sure if they all united against Fox News, it may show up eventually.
I’ll leave you with this: When asked what cable news network was unbiased in 2008, one thousand Americans in an October 16, 2008 Rasmussen Reports.com Poll found that 42% believed Fox News was unbiased, 33% believed CNN was unbiased, and 28% said MSNBC was unbiased.

Who reported the ACORN story, the Van Jones story … and who did not, for example?
By the way, CIC had quite an effect on what happened to ACORN and to Van Jones, didn’t it?
Over the last 10 years or so, Americans, with their personal computers, and the internet are rapidly becoming CIC-driven, as they find themselves increasingly becoming the willing recipients of distributed power.
This power is being drawn away from those CI-Structures, that are unwilling or unable to adapt to an exponential world. CIC is in the process of either transforming them … or destroying them.
The older Media Organizations were formed in a time when CI -Structures dominated the landscape, when we lived in a CI world. Some of them apparently have been unable to adapt. If you want to see the Report Card of their success in adapting, look above at The Ratings for October 5, 2009.
The same analysis could be done, by the way, for Newspapers, and other types of Media.
Fox News, on the other hand, is relatively new, having been formed in 1991. It is not a coincidence that it is relatively new, AND CIC-driven. It looks like Fox has had some exponential growth.
Could CIC have had anything to do with it? Could CIC-presenters like Glenn Beck, BillO’Reilly, Sean Hannity, Chris Wallace, Greta Van Susteren, Gretchen Carlson, Steve Doocy, Brian Kilmeade, Megyn Kelly, Bill Hemmer, Shepard Smith, etc. etc. etc. have had a lot to do with it.... but that's CIC too, isn't it?
I would suggest that Fox be wary of CI-structures ... wherever they may be ... CI-structures will always fight CIC ... because it draws away their power.
Don't worry if certain people call you, ”extremists, clowns, mouthpiece of the Republican Party, just a 'conservative radio talk-show' on TV." They are doing that because they are afraid of you.
Look at the success of New Media in the past 10 years. The Private Sector has responded to Americans gravitating to CIC, by inventing 21st century CIC-Media at a record pace.
