ObamaCare success: insurers stop writing policies for kids
Hotair ^ | 07/24/10 | Ed Morrissey

Barack Obama has been mighty keen on rolling out the most positive aspects of ObamaCare first in order to protect vulnerable Democrats facing voters angry over the bill’s passage. One of the big wins for Obama in the bill was the mandate for insurers to allow parents to carry their kids on policies until their 26th birthday. However, that intervention has created a rather perverse set of incentives that will see fewer children insured:

Some major health insurance companies have stopped issuing certain types of policies for children, an unintended consequence of President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul law, state officials said Friday. Florida Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty said in his state UnitedHealthcare and Blue Cross Blue Shield have stopped issuing new policies that cover children individually. Oklahoma Insurance Commissioner Kim Holland said a couple of local insurers in her state have done likewise. …

The major types of coverage for children — employer plans and government programs — are not be affected by the disruption. But a subset of policies — those that cover children as individuals — may run into problems. Even so, insurers are not canceling children’s coverage already issued, but refusing to write new policies. Starting on September 23rd, insurers will have to allow children onto plans at any time regardless of previous insurance or pre-existing conditions. The way the law is written, after that date parents can wait until their children get sick to sign them up for individual plans at any time. Insurers can’t predict the cost of sudden additions to plans for those making immediate use of the system, and so instead just won’t make those kinds of plans available.

Perhaps Congress should have taken more time thinking through these regulations before passing them into law. Even after nine months, the unintended consequences wind up making things worse rather than better.

Plus you have to be a triathelete to get a private policy as they await the rate increases of mandated guarantee issue.

Kids don’t need “healthcare.”

The only people that need it are those that have destroyed their bodies through a lifetime of eating non-food and taking prescription drugs. And the healthcate that they pay so dearly for just empties their wallet, and shortens their life.

Stop focusing on the unintended consequences of Obama's plan, you racist.

Instead, you should focus on the benevolence of his intentions.

They don't want no stinkin' health insurance companies to succeed. You must be on the government's s***care list.

Government motto:

You must pay for heath care but you may or may not get it.

.
Ever hear of “Fee for Service?” - In most cases it’s dirt cheap if you pick a competent doctor.

Wow! Didn't know if you ate the right foods you wouldn't break your bones or get an aneurysm (like my nephew), or...?

Go expletive-deleted yourself. Kids get sick and die without having 'destroyed their bodies'. And guess what, kids in places without your scare-quoted health-care die in greater numbers than kids who have access to modern medicine.

Mother Nature is not a nice person. It doesn't matter so much what you eat, it matters what's out there trying to eat you.

Aneurysm definitely indicates lots of destructive behavior. Structural weakness of the circulatory system doesn’t “just happen.’

Getting a broken bone set doesn’t require spending masive wealth on “health insurance.”

Your answer is sad and I pray you are not breeding, because your children would be in danger.

My children and my grandchildren (eight at current count) are doing outstandingly well, thank you.

Those that are doing so poorly that they cling to the false hope of “medicine” would do well to just not comment at all :o)

Well, nothing more to say except I see medicine (without the quotes) as a gift from God. Perhaps we would need less if we lead more healthy and virtuous lives, but I thank the Lord for talented surgeons and emergency room workers.

I wish you no ill will - Good evening, and I apologize for the flippant remark about breeding. Not good.

“Some Insurers Stop Writing New Coverage for Kids”
Friday, July 23, 2010
By Ricardo Alonso-Zaldivar, Associated Press

SNIPPET: “Washington (AP) - Some major health insurance companies have stopped issuing certain types of policies for children, an unintended consequence of President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul law, state officials said Friday.”

SNIPPET: “Starting later this year, the health care overhaul law requires insurers to accept children regardless of medical problems - a major early benefit of the complex legislation. Insurers are worried that parents will wait until kids get sick to sign them up, saddling the companies with unpredictable costs.”

Wow, just wow. Let me introduce you to some of these kids who, in your mind, just didn't eat right or took the wrong drugs.

This is Shannon, she has Leukemia.

This is Javier, he has Fanconi Anemia.

This is Hugo, he has Leukemia.

This is Madison, she has Leukemia.

This is My, she has a brain tumor.

This is Celeste, she has Still's disease.

This is Jessie, she has a brain tumor.

Now I'm sure you, in your infinite wisdom(sic) will gladly go to these children's families and tell them they didn't eat right, pray enough, have the right attitude, or have the enough enemas which is why they are dying.

I am just thanking God that rational people are in medicine and not folks like you and Kevin Trudeau.
