Thoughts about USPS....
Me | 07.34.2010 | Me

True story.. I work for the USPS as a mechanic... I fix and PM the machines that handle your mail. I am not a member of the union.

I'm transferring to another mail handling plant.

Long story short,,, I took a job paying 50K because I passed a test for the USPS.

The test has changed to allow custodians to pass the test.

Now anyone with common sense, but no real mechanical training can pass the test.

I put in for a transfer to my hometown. On my second to the last day,,(before moving) a black custodian said: " If I was you, I would not bother coming in tomorrow,, what they gonna do to you,, your leaving anyway...

I was applaud,,I said,,, its my job... she looked at me like I was from outer space... .... Obama voter...

PS... 2/3rds of the techs are not members of the unions...100% of the custodians are members of the union.... go figure....

“what they gonna do to you”

It means that if you're going anyway, you can't get into trouble for abusing sick leave. In my days in the post office, a whole lot, maybe even most the union members were conservatives, including one of the local union big shots. Many union members joined for local and contract reasons and ignored the national lefty propaganda.

Maybe it depends on location. I giess the USPS workforce generally reflects the local population. I lived at the time in a conservative area of the country so most of the employees, union or not, were politically conservative.

Now I understand. It initially seemed ominous.

I swear the 0bamabots that work in my local post office are the dumbest human beings on the planet. Its actually shocking to think that they are humans, they take stupidity and laziness to new levels. Its amazing that they can get to work everyday.

Your tag line.

This off topic but, I was just rereading the Declaration today and the grievances then are very similar to today.

That conservative lot in USPS may have been driven by preferential hiring of military veterans.

This is timely ... today my wife & I were briefly visiting my soon to be 89 year old mother-in-law. We visit with her frequently, we live only 10 minutes away. While we were there the door bell rang, the door was partly open, standing outside was a older gentleman with a cane and neck brace ... next to him an attractive women about his age. We answer the door and it turns out this man was my mother-in-laws (she recognized him immediately) former postman.
He had delivered her mail for over 15 years and had always made a point of checking on her if he felt something was amiss ... at that time we lived several hundred miles away and there were no family members nearby.
Bottom line, her postman had been involved in a serious automobile accident and had been incapacitated for several months ... he was recuperating and felt well enough to have his wife drive him around to visit some of his favorite former postal clients. He was planning to take disability retirement ... he had over 25 years with the USPS, a portion of it military. This is a part of America you don't hear about enough ... a wonderful individual who made a difference to my mother-in-law. My mother-in-law is a daughter of the American Revolution (Scotch/Irish) and her former postman is Black/Hispanic ... this is a great country.

Well your story is nicer than mine. I had a knock on the door one day, and it was MY ex-postman. He apparently had suffered a heart attack. He came to see if I could help him out financially. I may have spoken to him three or four times. He was also African American. So....I guess there’s a lesson to be learned by these two stories.

That was my first impression, not realizing it was a rhetorical question.

custodian said: " If I was you, I would not bother coming in tomorrow,, what they gonna do to you,, your leaving anyway...

Which I think can be translated to: "Since you're leaving, and they cannot fire you, there's no need to show up for work tomorrow".

You are exactly right,, today was my last day, and someone else would have had to pick up my slack.. I'm not wired that way. I carry my load +...

These machines will not run w/o regular maintenance.

Here is a link to see what they look like,,, amazing machines..the computers "look at" 5 pieces of mail/second,, read the address, assign them a pocket to be delivered to to be sent to the right P.O.
