The sky is not falling, but it is shrinking
Pointer's Weekly ^ | July 24, 2010 | Matt Ford

Scientists have discovered yet another enigma about our planet: the thermosphere has undergone serious shrinkage. The thermosphere is the largest portion of the Earth’s atmosphere and is the next-to-last region before you reach the vacuum of outer space. The fact that it has contracted is not surprising; the thermosphere absorbs extreme ultraviolet (EUV) photons from the sun and warms and cools—expanding and contracting—in a pattern that follows the 11-year solar cycle.

While we are coming out of one of the longer periods of low solar activity in a century, scientists have found that the thermosphere has shrunk some 28 percent. That’s the largest drop in recorded history, and they cannot explain why.

"The thermosphere density was a full 28 percent lower during the cycle 23/24 minimum than it was during the cycle 22/23 minimum. This is much larger than the decrease expected from the long-term trend seen over the past few cycles (that’s six percent). In contrast, the solar radio flux was down only 3.7 percent between cycles."

That's a big Twinkie.

So how long is this "recorded history"?

When the Sun’s ‘output’ is low, the atmosphere needs to get thinner. If it didn’t, we’d freeze.

They don’t ‘know’ that this is the first time it’s been this way (although they try to claim so) because we didn’t have the ability to make such precise measurements until recently.

The other possibility they consider is that changes in the chemical makeup and dynamical processes in mesosphere and lower thermosphere affect the concentration of atomic oxygen at the lower boundary.

I hate it when that happens.

So how long is this "recorded history"?

In the days of VHS, it was about 6 hours. I think TIVO may have extended that range.

But it doesn't matter. History is relative, and subject to change without notice.

The whole of their “recorded history” is only possible back to around 50 years ago and is probably as recent as the last 2 decades.

“The authors point out that such internal processes, coupled with known anthropogenic changes, could produce the missing 50 percent of the change that’s unaccounted for.”

Ah, there we go...it’s those damned charcoal grills and SUVs again.

> ...a full 28 percent...

How does a "full" 28% differ from, say, a "partial" 28%? Is there such a thing as an "overfull" 28%?

It seems to me that 28%, being less than one third of 100%, can't be described as "full" by any stretch of the imagination.

Or perhaps my imagination isn't "fully" operational yet this morning.

Well, since this is the FIRST TIME they have been able to determine the atmosphere is shrinking, I would conclude that the technology to make that determination is a very recent invention.

The first article that appeared about this indicated it was due to improved monitoring devices, and specially designed UAV’s that could stay aloft and monitor the higher regions of our atmosphere.

Why is it that ALL of the “World is going to end” Global Alarmists are LIBERALS?

Because all Liberals are GODLESS.

And God himself told us Five things: The world will end. How the world will end. What we are to do Until the world ends. There will be a new world. And not to fear the end if we know Jesus.

So, as soon as you take God OUT of the situation, all you are left with are five things. The world will end. Try to guess HOW. Try and DO stuff to prevent it. Believe there is no new world to replace it. And allow Fear and Panic to govern all your actions.

Excellent analysis topped off with a very applicable Matrix quote.

Kudos.
