Chris Christie’s Reagan-Style Governance Raising His 2012 Profile
Pajamas Media ^ | 7/26/10 | AWR Hawkins

When Ronald Reagan was sworn in as president in January 1981, the country was at low ebb. Jimmy Carter had spent the four previous years running the nation into the ground, leaving unemployment above 10%, inflation above 15%, Communist operatives laughing at our perceived weakness, and Iranians holding 53 of our fellow citizens hostage for 444 days.

When Republican Chris Christie was sworn into office as governor of New Jersey earlier this year, the situation he faced was somewhat similar. His predecessors, among them Democrat Jon Corzine, had run the state into the ground. Because of this, Christie literally inherited one of the highest combined tax rates in the nation and a state government that was dominated by union thugs.

Christie has a fatal flaw in his support for amnesty for illegal aliens.

He needs to change that if he hopes to get on the national stage.

“I have both my attorney general and my commissioner of health studying two things: first, what are the chances of succeeding in the lawsuit? Because with limited resources in New Jersey, I'm not going to throw good money after bad,” he said. “And, secondly, what's the effect of this 2,000-page bill going to be on the people of New Jersey? When I get answers back from them, I'll make a decision.” - Governor Christie

Good grief...

No, NO, HELL NO!

We need him here for two terms! There is too much for him to do in New Jersey.

America can have him afterwards!

Ha. I understand completely, but if we do not get a person like Mr. Christie in Washington in 2012, there may not be much left of the country or New Jersey by then.

Christie is right to rule out a run in 2012. If he can actually turn New Jersey around, it would be major resume enhancement for 2016 or later.

But if he wants to run in 2012, he has to get in now and, in so doing, it would be a major, and possibly even a terminal, distraction from turning the state around.

There is also the very real thought process of northeast libtard voters-- they will occasionally elect a GOP governor when the poop is so thick in their state that they can no longer stand it. But they will still vote for RATs in national office as they figure the cost of p*ss*ng in the nation's water supply is spread thin enough that the pork and bennies their rat bastard libtard will bring home will more than compensate.

I have been almost speechless with admiration for Gov. Christie in his handling of the disaster in New Jersey.

But I have read things about his stand on illegal immigration that just piss me off. He better bring himself up to snuff on this issue, and not just for his political image, but because it is the RIGHT way to handle this.

AMNESTY HAS BEEN TRIED MULTIPLE TIMES AND IT DOES NOT WORK, GOV. CHRISTIE.

I saw a little bit of the Christie interview on ABC’s “This Week” yesterday and found it impressive. I agree on the illegal alien issue. But, he did say that securing the border had to come first. Let me also say that this is the last time I will watch “This Week”. I refuse to watch any show that Christine Amanpour hosts.

Support for New Jersey gun laws is a fatal flaw in a national election. He's got a record going back to at least 1995 of attacking other Republicans for opposing gun control.

I am wondering if there is ANY Republican north of the Mason Dixon line who understands the illegal immigration problem. Rudy doesnt. Christie doesnt. Scott Brown doesnt.

Do you have do be closer to the border to realize the magnitude of the situation?

Below is an interview excerpt with FoxNews' Sean Hannity on Tuesday, October 27, 2009 dealing with Gun Control. Link to transcript at end of excerpt.

BEGINNING OF EXCERPT.

HANNITY: Are there any issues where you are, quote, moderate to left as a Republican?

CHRISTIE: Listen, I favor some of the gun-control measures we have in New Jersey.

HANNITY: Bad idea.

CHRISTIE: Listen, we have a densely-populated state, and there's a big hand gun problem in New Jersey. Now, I don't support all the things that the governor supports by a long stretch. But I think on guns — certain gun control issues, looking at it from a law-enforcement perspective, seeing how many police officers were killed, we have an illegal gun problem in New Jersey.

HANNITY: Should every — should every citizen in the state be allowed to get a licensed weapon if they want one?

CHRISTIE: In New Jersey, that's not going to happen, Sean.

HANNITY: Why?

CHRISTIE: Listen, the Democratic legislature we have, there's no way those type of things — listen, at the end of the day, what I support are common sense laws that will allow people to protect themselves, but I also am very concerned about the safety of our police officers on the streets, very concerned. And I want to make sure that we don't have an abundance of guns out there.

But listen, the issues in this race are taxes and jobs and spending.

END OF EXCERPT.

Typical double standards

It is okay to keep your elected job which is what McCain did, and run for president. Palin did it too in 2008 as governor. People then go back and finish their current elective office. They usually don’t quit midstream.

Supporting the enforcement of laws, existing or newly proposed, that infringe on Constitutional Rights isn't exactly a strength either.

Christie's view on the 2nd Amendment is on par with that of Lautenberg.

I'm no fan of Christie's stance on amnesty for illegal aliens, but there's a reason why elected officials from both parties are so pro-amnesty in New Jersey.

New Jersey has seen an alarming rate of out-migration among native-born residents over the last decade -- to the point where the state's population would be declining steeply were it not for all of the people moving here from other places (mostly New York City and other countries around the world). There is a sense among a lot of elected officials that the entire economy of this region would collapse without these new residents from elsewhere.

Christie may be a fiscal conservative. But he also is typically to the left on social issues.

Yes, he deserves kudos for breaking through the union (civil service and teachers) no fly zones. But he has yet to demand an exhaustive and meaningful review of all state gov’t programs—starting with entitlements. The review should be premised on elimination of programs that have not met their stated objectives and/or program consolidation.

Christie is right to focus on the public sector unions in New Jersey . . . the idea that the state could ever come close to closing its endless budget gaps through the elimination of useless programs is a bit of a pipe-dream. The state’s massive pension and medical insurance obligations are so insurmountable on their own that they have begun to dwarf all of the other public expenditures in its budget.

Hildy, he's for a pathway to citizenship, were you born yesterday? That's code for anmesty.

I understand that you live in a nice little ivory tower world where illegals aren't that big a problem, but I live with the problem every day and have for years.

I have lost friends who are cops, I've held the hand of one of their wives, I lost a 65 year old neighbor who was RAPED by an illegal and 6 months later was found to have "mistakenly overdosed" on her medication. Yeah, sure, a half a bottle is some mistake, especially since I sat with her day after day as she sobbed about never feeling safe in her own home, how the police and the politicians wouldn't help her and how somehow it must have been her fault.

So you can think these animals want citizenship because they are all just lovely little creatures wanting nothing more than to be an American citizen, but I know better.

No, they should be sent home. If they want to become Americans then they can apply just like everyone else.

I know exactly where you live Hildy, and it's far, far, far from the dangers some of us live in. I have lived here my entire life, and in this house for 28 years. I have watched a safe, clean, family area turned into a hunting ground for feral illegals.

You don't have to deport them, just turn off the spigots of largess and they will deport themselves. They are already doing it in droves. If the Arizona law becomes the law of the land, they will go home. No schools, no forcing hospitals to tend to the sniffles of their kids, no welfare, no food stamps.

New Jersey’s Republican Gov. Chris Christie called on Congress and the White House to push immigration reform on this year’s agenda, adding that they should take a cue from him on how to build a bipartisan consensus.

“The president and the Congress have to step up to the plate, they have to secure our borders, and they have to put forward a commonsense path to citizenship for people,” Christie said on ABC’s “This Week.”

Sorry, I'm just having a very hard time right now. My neighbor was leaving for work today at 7 AM and went back inside the house to get his lunch and found an illegal stealing his TV in broad daylight. I'm sick to death of living like this and Thursday can't come fast enough.

As to Christie, he's great on fiscal matters but anyone who wants a "path to citizenship" needs to come to Phoenix to find out what he's talking about before he shoots his mouth off.
