Breaking News on CBS 'Early Show': Chelsea Clinton's Wedding Will Have Porcelain Port-a-Potties!
NewsBusters ^ | July 30, 2010 | Kyle Drennen

Posted on 07/31/2010 12:24:51 AM PDT by Zakeet

Friday's CBS Early Show devoted a six-minute segment in its 7:30AM ET half hour to the Saturday wedding of Chelsea Clinton. Correspondent Elaine Quijano reported on the event having "Eva Longoria's florist" and "presidential party planners." Entertainment Tonight correspondent Diane Dimond added: "...they have porcelain port-a-potties for all of the guests....with music piped in."

Dimond went on to mention how the guest list would feature Hollywood liberals like Barbara Streisand and Steven Spielberg. Concluding her report, Quijano declared: "Now tonight the rehearsal dinner is reportedly set to take place nearby, at the 500-plus acre Grasmere estate. We are told, Harry, that guests will dine in an old stone barn overlooking a bucolic pastoral setting....they're being asked to wear country chic." The segment did not raise any questions about the over-the-top extravagance of the affair, which is estimated to cost a few million dollars.

The Saturday Early Show plans to go even further in its coverage, featuring a special titled 'A Chelsea Morning' to commemorate the wedding.

After Quijano's Friday Early Show report, co-host Harry Smith discussed further wedding details with Daily Beast senior correspondent Rebecca Dana and editor-at-large Lloyd Grove. Speaking of Chealsea Clinton, Smith observed: "...she has been basically shielded from this and now we cannot get enough of whatever is happening behind the scenes." Dana replied: "We're eating it all up, yeah." She then remarked: "...mother and father Clinton, seem to be taking this very seriously, attacking it with the same vigor that they've attacked their political careers."

Here is a full transcript of Quijano's July 30 report:

7:30AM ET

HARRY SMITH: But first, tomorrow's the big day for Chelsea Clinton and her fiancee Marc Mezvinsky. And never mind the guest list. There is rampant speculation about everything from designers to dollars and everything in between. CBS News correspondent Elaine Quijano has the story.

[ON-SCREEN HEADLINE: The Big Day; All Eyes on Chelsea Clinton Wedding]

ELAINE QUIJANO: A trench coat-clad Chelsea Clinton was spotted outside her Manhattan gym on Thursday, just days before she'll don a designer wedding gown. Whether Oscar de La Renta or Vera Wang is still in question. But it's clear the ultimate power couple is planning the ultimate wedding for their only child. Details about what kind of wedding more than $2 million can buy? Eva Longoria's florist, presidential party planners, and-

DIANE DIMOND [ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT]: Well, they have porcelain port-a-potties for all of the guests at the rehearsal dinner and the wedding.

QUIJANO: Port-a-potties?

DIMOND: Porcelain port-a-potties with music piped in.

QUIJANO: President Obama says he didn't make the guest list, but for good reason.

BARACK OBAMA: You don't want two presidents at a wedding.

QUJANO: Who is on this guest list?

DIMOND: Well, 'Entertainment Tonight' has confirmed that Barbara Streisand is coming, Steven Spielberg, among many others.

QUIJANO: In downtown Rhinebeck, the uninvited guests, the media, have definitely arrived. Giving the small town some welcome attention.

UNIDENTIFIED GIRL [RHINEBECK RESIDENT]: She could choose any town in the whole world but she decided to choose this little town.

QUIJANO: Amid the celebration, poignant moments of reflection for the father of the groom, Edward Mezvinsky.

EDWARD MEZVINSKY: They are strong, wonderful, loving, caring, and sensitive human beings.

QUIJANO: Now, some of the wedding guests are expected to stay here at the historic Beekman Arms Inn behind me. They could be arriving, of course, today. We'll be keeping a very close eye on the situation here, Harry. Now tonight the rehearsal dinner is reportedly set to take place nearby, at the 500-plus acre Grasmere estate. We are told, Harry, that guests will dine in an old stone barn overlooking a bucolic pastoral setting. And Harry, they're being asked to wear country chic.

SMITH: Country chic. Elaine Quijano in Rhinebeck this morning, thank you very much.

It's as much Billary's wedding too. Aren't they paying for it and are as responsible for its extravagance as Chelsea?

I am surprised they didn’t have golden port-a-potties. Actually I agree that privacy for the couple would be appropriate, except for the incredible imperial spending in tough times. Used to live in the Hudson valley, lovely area, but this level of spending would pay for all unemployed for scores of miles in every direction.

Just think of the outrage from the MSM if this were connected to some Republican. Just rich Republicans rubbing their wealth in the poor noses of the down trodden..but yet, now, it’s a whoop-dee-doo event—so glamorous only because its the daughter of a sex crazed pathological liar and a psychopath Marxist.

But it’s ok for rich Democrats—because they aren’t really rich and they are “fighting for you”, the small people. I wonder how much this Soro financed affair is gonna cost us in sole sourced contracts—somebody is gonna have to foot the bill and recover this mega-cash outlay.

If Soros is paying for it, well good on him, that answers the question of where the money will come from!

Actually, the Clintons are quite rich enough of their own accord to pay for this several dozen times over. Traditionally the bride’s parents pay, so this would be nothing strange. And you can bet the caterers, etc. are salivating at the income they will get. This is capitalism being capitalism; this is not a taxpayer funded expenditure. I say hurrah for the Clintons.

Oh if you mean how are the Clintons themselves that rich? They were rich before Bill Clinton became president. After Bill Clinton left the White House he commanded royal fees for speaking and there was no shortage of liberal institutions that wanted to pay gold for his gab. This is all capitalism, even if we hate the thing that is being traded.

People that didn’t even own a house before winning the Presidency are now fabulously rich. And they did zip to earn it short of selling their celebrity and likely their country.

Has any other family turned such a profit on the White House, ever?

Has any other President given a 5 million dollar wedding to their daughter, ever?

Yet Bill and crew are one of the little people feeling everyone’s pain...

We live in strange times.

Oh, and I wouldn’t complain if, say, Rush Limbaugh threw a 10 million dollar wedding for his daughter (does he have one?). Or George W. Bush, post-presidency of course, did. This is how the rich help the economy, by spending locally like crazy when they are able. (I don’t think that spread is going to come from China, do you?)

However, the “Let them eat cake” moment by the press is what is disgusting. People are hurting and they are talking about the Million spent on it. All the while, the conservatives are the greedy b@stards. Right.

Remember the good old days when you kept things that were crass a secret?

ps Jenna Bush’s wedding was 100,000 dollars. That’s class!

I would tend to agree but for this exeption. Bill and Hillary want us to tighten our belts and make sacrifices for the betterment of mandkind. Bill and Hillary didn't have a pot to piss in when he was governer. How do suppose they have the money for this? Read between the lines.

Are you quite sure about that? It seems to me that the Clintons have been stealing from the taxpayers for years while they stiff everyone they do business with. Remember all the stuff they lifted from the WH until they were caught?

Yeah, I'm getting a little tired of hearing of all the wonderful things our ruling class is doing.

Besides, where did the Clintons get the money for this? They were broke not too long ago.

It seems to me, politicians are profiting too mush from being politicians. They don't earn this money.

The Clintons were poor when they took over the WH. They didn’t have furniture. They never owned a home. Nada. They had lived in “public housing” all their lives and billed everything to the “state”, or to a campaign. THey got huge advances for their books, but I don’t think those books sold well. The advances were just another under the table pay off to a politician.

They furnished the family quarters of the WH with “gifts” from businesses and favor seekers by promising that the furniture would become part of the permanent WH collection. Then they took the stuff with them (or tried to) when they left. They moved into the WH with a vanload of files and left with 13 vans of furniture and antiques. Most presidential families supplement the WH furnishings in the family quarters with their own things.

The WH steward even rescued a bronze bust of JFK from a box of stuff Bill was packing when they left. Do you honestly think that Bill didn’t know it wasn’t his?

They also filled the WH with permanent guests that the taxpayers supported — Hillary’s mother, brothers, etc. all lived there for most of the presidency and Bill’s brother too. Neither one of them ever pays for a thing out of pocket. The grifters just float through life with other people picking up the tab.

The $5M dollar wedding? I’d love to know how much they are really paying themselves. I’ll bet that much of it is donated by their hangers-on.

OK, so it’s donated. I guess that would be a potential ethical concern (quid pro quo) in regards to Hillary’s involvement in government. Specially if she aspires to be the Big Cheese. Bill won’t be running for anything else. But being donated per se looks like nothing to complain about; that’s just more capitalism.

Still, what happened to the dough that Bill supposedly got for his speaking? The press were talking staggering amounts, in the vicinity of $50-$100K, per talk. 100 talks and Bill’s golden tongue would have earned that $5 million.

But, but, but. Hillary testified that she made that investment because she read the Wall Street Journal. Mmmmm-Mmmmm-Mmmmm. s/off

Then there was that secret bank account that she and Vince Foster and somebody else had in Switzerland. Vince took a little trip over there to check on it and found it empty shortly before his mysterious death and faked suicide farewell written on post-it notes and torn in itty bitty pieces.

Well, there’s just one little lthing. I don’t believe that she’s ever paid off her campaign expenditures. Last I heard she was still trying to raise cash to pay the little vendors that produced all the signs, audio systems, sandwiches, etc. She was millions in debt just a few months ago and sending out letters begging for cash. Same with Bill’s defense fund. THey are always begging for cash. They never pay for anything themselves.

Just ask the waitresses that served her at numerous campaign stops. She and her traveling staff would choose a restaurant, eat, and breeze out without paying the bill and leave no tip either. It happened too often to be an accident, or an oversight.

Even on vacations. One time Bill picked up a bag of stuff from various shops at Martha’s Vineyard. Didn’t pay for any of it. Some of it was donated by the shop owner specifically as gifts for Chelsea. Then, he gave it to Monica Lewinski for services rendered.

If I had a shop, or an eatery, and either of them came in I’d ask for cash on the counter in advance.

When they were leaving the WH, they also had a “shower” for themselves with a gift wish list that included a dining room side board and other furniture, silverware, jewelry, clothing, etc. Just suggestions for their admirerers. But, the stipulated that all the gifts had to be delivered before a certain date so she didn’t have to declare them upon being sworn in to the Senate which precluded her from accepting lavish gifts.

They moved into the WH with several cartons of files and moved out with 13 van loads of furniture and accessories with which they furnished 5 domiciles — his house in Chappaqua, her house in Georgetown, a condo in Arkansas for her mother, and an apartment in Arkansas at the Clinton library, and an apartment in Harlem connected to Bill’s offices. (They had to return on van load of WH treasures because they were caught.) Ever wonder how that happened?

I don’t remember the Gores involved in such a scandal. Their charitable contributions were pitiful, but I don’t remember any stories about them failing to pay their bills. They used the excuse on the charities that their daughter got married that year. Well, that daughter has now filed for divorce — 2 weeks after her parents made the same announcement.

Oh well, now the cops say they don’t have sufficient evidence against the Gorebot on his alleged sexual assault charge in Oregon, so we should leave the poor man alone.

As much as I would love to join in this bash-fest, in many ways I just feel it is inappropriate. The Clinton's were rich before the White House, they are ubber rich now, and will likely continue to be wealthy for years to come. Let Chelsea have her wedding.

but I will add, could you imagine this wedding if Hillary was President!?! But alas, she is not and this really is just another quasi celebrity commoners wedding event.

May Chelsea find happiness in her marriage, today and forever.
