Officials kill grizzly bears to head-off lawsuits before they arise

Wildlife officials have killed a grizzly bear in Wyoming and a grizzly bear in Montana to head-off potential lawsuits.

The Montana grizzly killed and partially consumed Kevin Kammer at a Gallatin National Forest campground near Cooke City, Mont. on July 29. The Wyoming grizzly killed 70 year-old botanist Erwin Evert on June 17 on the Shoshone National Forest near the East Entrance of Yellowstone National Park.

The circumstances were quite different, but the decision to kill the bears was undoubtedly influenced by a 1996 court case over the terrible bear mauling of 16 year-old Anna Knochel at a U.S. Forest Service campground near Tucson, AZ. She was mauled by a bear that had recently inflicted minor injuries on another girl. Knochel and her family filed a $15 million lawsuit against the State of Arizona (Arizona Game & Fish Department) and the Forest Service.

When the law is such that a person cannot defend themselves against a bear the government entity should be sued...Let people who go into wildness areas carry big guns, then they can be said to have taken a reasonable risk in such areas.

But to disarm people, it means that humans are an easy snack for a bear, no long teeth or claws to defend with....arming is the only protection a human has.

If all the bears in the area are eliminated, no more problem and people will be safe....

There were reasons our ancestors killed top of the line predators...then some idiot reintroduces them to human habitats....

Since you were there why didn’t you help him?

Or at least video it?

"Then allow grizzly bear hunting."

They do...in Alaska.

Wife & I leave Nawth Flawaduh in about 10 days for a 7 week trip to Alaska, where I'll be hunting brown/grizzly bears about 250 miles west of Anchorage.

We need new carpet.

Great idea! Like the suggestion that those pesky alligators that have killed golfers in Florida should be transferred to the Rio Grande between Texas and Mexico.

Great idea and also send vicious pit bulls to the same area. they would be evenly matched. Solves 2 problems..(but I think the bear has a little advantage)

Opps, solves 3 problems...

I don’t know too much about confining grizzly bears to an area, could they not get over things as they can climb trees? I don’t think we can rely on electric fences as electricity service can go down.

Outdoor writer Jim Zumbo once wrote "having a grizzly wander though my yard from time to time is a small price to pay for having these magnificent bears exist in this area". (Cody, Wyoming)

To each his own. Personally I prefer that my great grandsons can play in my yard without a grizzly wandering by.

The “Deer Crossing” signs always amuse me.

We need a Deer Patrol Czar here in Missouri, our deer don't obey them!

Somehow I hadn’t placed chipmunks in the predator category.

that's because you are not a sunflower seed

My bad. I should have referred to Zumbo as an ex outdoor writer.

Zumbo's "black rifle" statement was a "Career Ender".

Unionized bureaucrats on full pensions will kill more grizzlies than were taken by hunters who would pay for the privilege. That is what happened with mountain lions in California.

Hunters like him have been a big part of the problem thinking that the gun grabbers would stop at “hunting” rifles.

Many didn’t care that black rifles and semi auto handguns were being attacked as long as 30.06’s and revolvers were being “left alone”.

Rather than wipe out the species just make sure they are confined to a viable PRIVATE wildlife area;but stop pretending wild predators and humans can co-exist peacefully.

There, fixed it.

If somebody wants to market the benefits of bears, they should take responsibility for their behavior. As things were when white guys hit this continent, Indian hunting was so effective that there may have been no more than 5,000 grizzlies.

As things are now, the bureaucrats are doing the bidding of Marxist power freaks, crooked developers looking to cash in on Sustainable Communities, and investors in South American food production by forcing people out of rural lands.

Of an estimated 80 million gun owners only about 5 million are members of a pro gun group.

When you and I talk to our fellow shooters and hunters about protecting their rights many of our peers call us gun nuts. It is just human nature for too many not to worry until the bear is at their door.

The old saying "win the battles you can by next Friday and the war will take care of it's self" works for me when dealing with both gun owners and the antis.

You enter a wildlife area at your own risk.

Exactly.

Humans invading their habitat.

Same problem in expanding suburban areas, i.e., the Seattle area where developement is slowly encroaching wildlife habitat in the foothills of the Cascade mountain range then bitch about the cougars!!

Same logic of those buying in an developement with a cutesy man-made lake/pond and then bitch when the geese and ducks show up!!

Same logic of those moving near an airport and then bitch about the noise!!

My sister in law bought a house in Montana, after she bought it she learned it is right beside a Grizzly Bear Refuge. Guess what, they are not “confined”, they roam around the entire area even her yard.

Your sister in law should probably have an electric fence strung up around her yard.....if its the right kind of fence, they work wonders. A hand cannon or two are also recommended.

Not a logical argument by a long shot.

We’re talking about predators, in fact predators that are a danger to man.

I’ve never heard of geese, ducks or noise from an airport killing humans.

When authorities tell people they can’t protect themselves from man killing predators those authorities should be held to task and laws changed so people may protect themselves.
