Richard Dreyfuss: Rebuilding America will take focus on civics education
Across the Back Fence ^ | 08/08/2010 | Todd Fitchette

There is an undeniable connection between the political battles of the 21st Century and the move away from teaching civics at all levels in the public education system during the later part of the 20th Century. The benefits of reinstituting a solid curriculum of civics into our school system, and ultimately our way of life, will be monumental.

We need to look no farther than our television set to find the cause and effect such a slide away from teaching civics has had on America, and in a larger sense, the global society.

Academy Award winning actor Richard Dreyfuss is promoting an initiative to make civics education a vital part of our public education process. According to the Dreyfuss Initiative:

I think there are some Hollywood liberals who are even shocked at just how far left this communist totalitarian regime is going.

It's funny that you say this. Just this morning I was saying that (Gov) Jerry Brown, running for CA Gov, is really the embodiment of the 1970s LIBERAL LEFTIST. They did not want the Soviet Union here; they had their limits. They bristled at Communism. But Obama is in ANOTHER LEAGUE. Obama stands for and wants pure Soviet style communism, which is of course despotism and oligarchy. Basically, Obama stands for FAILED OLD Communism. It would be quite weird if it were not so dangerous.

Agreed about the Hollywood Statement. I just don’t trust much of Hollywood anymore. Of course there is always the occasional exception. I hope your right.

I disagree. I think they are wringing their hands in glee.

Hollywood and ALL of television support Obama 100%. They are scum. Dreyfuss was always a weasley little sh*t who could not act to save his life.

I loathe all of Hollywood and all of television especially the sports sh*t that has incredible liberal bias that is masked so much that the idiots don’t get it. Ditto most of Madison Ave.

The collected wisdom of Mr. Dreyfuss:

“It must be remembered that the Bush White House has a separate talent for character assassination that must not be confused with a talent for governance.”

“Kerry is an adult - he thinks things through. He learns from the present as well as the past. To George Bush, thinking things through is for sissies.”

“Cindy Sheehan is making a starting point with the questions she is asking and it’s not unpatriotic to ask them, ... It’s actually a higher form of patriotism.”

“There are causes worth fighting for even if you know that you will lose. Unless you are willing to accept torture as part of a normal American political lexicon, unless you are willing to accept that leaving the Geneva Convention is fine and dandy, if you accept the expansion of wiretapping as business as usual, the only way to express this now is to embrace the difficult and perhaps embarrassing process of impeachment.”

A better start would be to send the President, his staff, the entire Executive Branch, Congress and even the Supreme Court to school so they can learn what the Constitution of the United States says.

THE SCHOOLS A WORTHLESS!

They're a big part of this clown being in the White House, and getting away with jive talking us every single day.

I honestly don’t know what Dreyfuss’ political affiliation is; I’m simply responding to his words and what he said. Taken at face value though he’s got a great point: we have done a very poor job of educating students in terms of the true history of this country and on civics.
Kids today don’t have the common sense of a wet noodle. Schools don’t teach students HOW to learn, they simply teach a set of facts necessary to pass standardized tests.

I guess the big question would be whose version and meaning of civics, George Washington or Karl Marx?

When did Dreyfuss change his political stripes?

I'm not certain he did. But it seems that many, many Democrats are getting the message that the Democrat left is w-a-a-y too left, and that w-a-a-y too left is not what they meant when they became Democrats.

I’m sure he didn’t. Just wait ‘til you find out what his idea of a good civics lesson is.

He’s a hardcore leftist.

His civics curriculum would be stacked against any opposing view point. Trust me.

Richard Dreyfuss is a far Left socialist dork. You can bet any civics curriculum he’s involved with will resemble the old Soviet “re-education” camps.

I think it's more a case of they got what they wanted but didn't like it when they got it. Dreyfuss wanted all the leftist stuff, but like most of the artsy guys and the trust fund radicals (Meghan McCain,) they think that the mechanism of production will continue forever, even if they continue to scoop huge amounts of venture capital out of the system to fund their pipe dreams. They make it more profitable to sit on your rear than to work, then can't figure out why no one wants to work.

When did Dreyfuss change his political stripes?

The good news is he wants to teach more civics. The bad news it, he wants to teach civics according to Marx.

Dreyfuss portrayed U.S Vice President Dick Cheney in Oliver Stone’s 2008 George W. Bush bio-pic W.

On February 16, 2006, Dreyfuss spoke at The National Press Club in Washington, D.C. in hopes of prompting a national discussion on impeachment charges against U.S. President George W. Bush.

In November 2009, he said that journalists are the only representatives citizens have left in Washington. “I am going to ask the Republican and Democratic parties for big checks.”

My thoughts exaclty. When did he change stripes? What is his angle? To teach how great Obama is?
