No source, this isn't a blog post or news article. I have some questions that I am hoping can be answered by folks with more experience and information.
I have done some research, but am not entirely sure of my findings.
I am going to enlist in the Army National Guard. There are a number of reasons I am choosing the Guard over regular Army, not the least of which is the ability to remain within the state of Texas (which has its own reasons for being a concern).
Still, I want to enlist as a full time Guard, rather than the one weekend a month/two weeks a year option. I have read that this falls under Title 32 or Title 10, but beyond that the information I can locate online is questionable in its reliability. I'm hoping there are some recruiters or, better yet, MEPS counselors on FR that can help me solidify my understanding before I proceed.
I meet with the recruiter tomorrow, and would like to be as informed as possible. Is it accurate that Title 32 means I will be a full time (active?) Guard, while remaining within the state?
Also, does anyone know how that needs to be stated in the contract?
I'm sure I will have more questions, so please bear with me. Also, thanks in advance to anyone who can assist.
Hey, I am in the Arkansas National Guard, the info posted is pretty good. I will throw another one at you, if you cant get on AGR you can be federal technician wear your uniform and paid on the GS scale. that might be a better route for you , more jobs. usually agr is supply,recruiting,training. I have been in the guard 14 years and did 2 tours to Iraq. I have worked for the guard since 2003 as either a contractor,ADSW or a technician. btw what MOS are you going into?
i know what you are saying, but a little thing called deployments has taken a toll on that. i was a spc for 7 years then the deployments came around 2003 I have jumped 2 ranks, heck I would be a 7 by now if i could get a BNCOC class.
Yeah, I’ve gotten a lot of great information in a short period of time. I am VERY thankful for all the help from everyone.
At least now I know what direction to look for further info.
As to my MOS, I won’t know until I sign, obviously, but I am hoping to be assigned to an MOS that will allow for me to attend the DLI in Monterey. Obviously that means one of the intel tracks.
I figure that might be pretty tough with the Guard, but I’m still hopeful. I thought going “full time” would make me MORE likely to get such an MOS, because I thought it was a case of wanting more full time, rather than having such a limited number of positions. Obviously I had it backwards.
I have a list of MOSs, in order of preference, that I am interested in and/or willing to sign on as.
I am going to do some reading about the AGR and see how I might best be able to pursue that.
Due to my age, I am limited to the Army or Army Guard, which is fine. I consider all branches to be equally honorable and important. It’s just unfortunate that I waited so long to get things underway and am now faced with a limited number of ways to achieve my goals.
btw I know know what surface main tech really is i thought it was actaully blacktoping road so I asked why are they always needing these guys. turns out they work at CSMS could be a mechanic or electronics technician.
thats linguist, they need arab interps i dont forsee much of a civilian job in that, unless you work it out to get in the FBI. I deployed with an 09L they are natural foreign speakers so they dont have to go to DLI just how to get the info we need. My buddy was a Lebanese christian he was very helpful to us at intel gathering, now he has some good contacts with the FBI, i think he will be hired by them sortly

I believe some of the 35 tracks go to DLI as well. HUMINT, for one.
I grew up in the Middle East, so learned some Arabic along the way. I just need to stop being lazy and study it again, and get some actual instruction (hence the DLI).
Obviously I want an Intel MOS, but if that’s not possible in the Guard, so be it. I have other interests as well.
As for use in the civilian sector, that’s only a moderate concern. I plan to stay in for a long time, and if I have training as a linguist I can always do contract work like my uncle does. In fact, he opened his own business after getting out of the Marines and is an translator/interpreter.
But really, I want to be in for the long haul, so am set on getting an MOS I can be happy with.
Your home of record would always be Texas even if you enlisted RA.
The chances of enlisting for an AGR position is slim and none with none being the term you should look at.
The advice of checking with local units is not bad, especially if you know someone.
The deal is that you can only enlist for a job that exists in a unit *close enough* for you to make drills. Normally that means withing reasonable driving time, not live in Beaumont and drill in EL Paso. But there are exceptions to that, question is will your situation be exceptional? Why should a unit commander fill one of his slots for someone 500 miles away that may not make drills?
Again, look at what your real question is: is it maintaining a home of record which means tax breaks etc or actual residence which the RA cannot promise.
If a full time position is available, my wife and I have decided we are willing to move. As for my reason for keeping residence in Texas, it’s more about my wife staying in TX, near family, if I get deployed. Plus, the tax issue isn’t a bad point.
And I REALLY don’t want to get moved to Massachusetts or Cali.

I “usta be” an RA and reserve recruiter. Something change; some things don’t.
If you want to be full time and don’t absolutely have to live in Texas all the time and can handle some family separation, then go RA.
If you cannot, the look at guard or reserve.
Seeking a FT guard or reserve position off the street ain’t gonna happen without some incredible pull or a very needed skill set.
