Gingrich Now Owns This Deal
SPECTATOR.ORG ^ | 11 AUGUST 2010 | QUIN HILLYER

With Karen Handel conceding to Nathan Deal in the race for governor in Georgia, Newt Gingrich's possible presidential campaign should not hang in the balance. There is no way, none whatsoever, that Deal would have beaten Handel if home-state icon Gingrich had not weighed in so heavily for him. He barely squeaked past Ms. Handel. But Mr. Deal has a pending federal investigation against him. If this investigation finds Deal to have seriously erred, and it costs Georgia Republicans the governorship, it is Gingrich who should get the blame. Gingrich already has insulted conservatives not just by endorsing DeDe Scozzafava over Doug Hoffman in New York last year, but actually criticizing Hoffman supporters in harsh and disparaging terms. Now he carries the ethically-challenged Deal across the finish line. This is his Deal now. One can only hope that the charges against Deal have no merit. But Democrats reportedly are licking their chops. They thought Deal was a weaker candidate in the general election than Handel. IF they prove right, Gingrich should not be allowed to live it down. When are Washington GOPers going to stop their sickening mutual back-scratching and letting the local Republican voters make decisions on their own?

Someone explain to me how Palin's the loser when Newt's guy barely registered over 50% and won by mere fractions of a percent?

Darn, I would hate to be considered the Fat Salamander’s candidate.

Deal won because he had better organization and got out the vote in his home district. Nothing more.

>>Deal won because he had better organization and got out the vote in his home district. Nothing more.<<

I strongly disagree. It is always a combination of factors. e.g. If he were Hitler reincarnate, that would not have been enough. Likewise, if she were Reagan reincarnate it would not have been enough.

It went to whoever had the most votes.

Can we stop this nonsense and get a real statesman to run for President? Really tired of all these political jousters, how about an actual Statesman?

One of the difference between Republicans running against each other in a primary, and Republicans having to run against Democrats in a general.

Deal won because he was the better candidate. I voted for Deal because of his character, not for who endorsed him.

I asked my wife who she was going to vote for and her default answer was for Sarah’s girl. I then asked why. She had not answer.

We then spoke about the candidates at little more deeply. I love my wife!

Deal won because he had better organization and got out the vote in his home district. Nothing more.

Very true. Of course democrats can produce more votes from opening the trunk of their car.

Either way they win and we let them.

sad

Another consideration was the perception, rightly or wrongly, that Handel was the Atlanta big city candidate, and Deal the candidate for the rest of Ga(country folks).

In the runoff, I was contacted by many Deal supporters(NRA, etc) and not one Handel supporter.

It just seemed that Deal had the better organization/get out the vote operation, came from behind and won.

I think records, debates, etc had more to do with it than endorsements. The challenge now will be to work together to defeat Barnes.

Just my 2 cents, YMMV

Palin will come out of this one looking good if Deal gets indicted. I would bet money on the Dems playing an “October surprise”, a Deal indictment, on Georgia voters. After her Alaskan career fighting corruption, there is no way she would have ever endorsed Deal.

Call from 1994 for Mr. Gingrich. Please answer the yellow phone to return home.

Republican candidates always have to be squeaky clean, no taint of scandal whatsoever. If you kicked the cat sometime, someone, somewhere will find out and put it on the front page.

Here in NM, the Republican Hispanic candidate for governor bought some office supplies back in 2003-2005 from one of her employees. That was before current state purchasing rules prohibited it and audits cleared her of any violations. However that doesn’t stop the local ABQ Urinal from splashing it above the fold in last Sunday’s newspaper. Compared to the corruption ridden Richardson regime, she IS squeaky clean but this is touted as a black mark against her.

Same with Sarah Palin; the left media tries to dig up dirt anyway they can and chose the route of filing nuisance ethics charges against her when governor. It got to the point that as governor she was spending all her time fighting them and on top of that she had to defend them with her own money which with $500,000 in lawyer fees finally led to her resigning from office before the family was bankrupted.

So if Deal is seriously tainted, he needs to step aside for the good of the party. If not and Republicans loose in November because of this, they once again deserve the label the “stupid party.”

Deal needs to tell the world to put up or shut up.

Just telling the justice system still makes him look tainted.

Grow a pair and tell Georgia that you are going to be the next governor and this is what he will do for us.

If he gets indicted he will spend the remaining days before the election defending himself. He may be counting on a backlash, but I'm sure that won't overcome the distaste voters will have. He will need to go before then. And Gingrich (and the Huckster) need to go and stay home.
