In defense of Dr. Laura Schlessinger and all Adult thinking people in America
I received a phone call from a Black friend who knows that I write this blog. He wanted to alert me of Dr. Laura Schlessinger’s most recent travail with the archaic notion of freedom of speech in America.
According to my friend, Dr. Laura said the word Nigger. After a lingering pause, my friend obviously waiting for my response, I said half jokingly, “…and then she killed someone?” but to my friend this was no laughing matter. So I asked, did Dr. Laura call someone a Nigger or did she simply say the word? He said that he didn’t hear it himself he just heard Al Sharpen talking about it on CNN. “You can turn to it and see yourself,” he said.
I told him that a T.V. wasn’t available to me right at the moment but I would look into it and get back to him. He said, “You’re good at researching on the net I’m sure you can find it.” First, I assured him that Dr. Laura is a good person and a consummate professional. I said that I’m sure that this was a complete misunderstanding. I thanked him for the “heads-up” and then we hung up.
I did query the subject. I think I put in Dr. Laura and the word “Nigger” and sure enough, the net was on fire with flames of condemnation, which were threatening to lap up the career of Dr. Laura.

It’s yet another example of the double standard. Supposedly the reason blacks can use the word, is because of the context. They aren’t using it as an epitath. They use it as a term of endearment, or punctuation. Therefore, since Dr. Laura used it not as an epitath, but to issustrate a point, where’s the harm? No harm, no foul. The only foul was that it ruffled some feathers of the usual suspects. Unless and until the black community stops using it altogether, it will never go away. They are the ones that brought it back into the lexicon.

You would think by now that every conservative in the world who has a public voice should never never never use the n-word in any context whatsoever. There are blacks out there who have nothing else to do except audit every word spoken by conservatives. We all know that we are held to a different standard, so we have to be smarter in getting our ideas across. Sad commentary on the state of freedom of speech in America, but it’s reality.
