There has been much speculation in the media that perhaps Obama really doesn't care if he's a one-term president. Surely one could say that his actions suggest that possibility. But there is a HUGE difference between declining to run for a second term, and suffering a huge repudiation by the electorate. So let's speculate..
After the impending losses this November, he will face confusion and chaos in his own caucus....myriad calls for "change" and the likelihood of the need for a major reorganization of the WH staff.
The key thrust of the GOP opposition will be attempts to repeal/curb Obamacare, and if he presses that battle, it's almost a guarantee of his defeat in 2012. If he aquiesces, he's admitted that he failed/lied to the American people in 2008, which will also probably lead to defeat. And this presumes that he won't face a primary challenger ( hello, Hillary)
But if he decides in his mind that he wants out, then, what's next?...Another book(s)? Lucrative speaking circuit. Global fundraising, a la Clinton? Bubba is still sucking up a lot of that oxygen. Go on a few boards?..heck, Gore made a bundle, and he wasn't even president..presidency of a major foundation or university...nah..a nice gig, but too far out of the limelight...
Just so happens that there's an opening on 12/31/2011..nice gig in midtown NYC..comes with unlimited travel, a townhouse on Sutton Place, endless exposure to an adoring MSM..the ultimate bully pulpit...without having to worry about what the party and the voters care or think..don't even have to bother to go to church on Sundays..amazing golf courses in the metropolitan area..Winged Foot is a 15 minute copter ride from midtown....for a guy who thinks of himself as a "citizen of the world"..well, it's perfect..
Now, the details..and why this just might work...
The SecGen serves for a 5 year term, which can be renewed indefinitely, though by common practice, none have served more than 2 terms. The current SG, Ban Ki-Moon, is, well..a nobody..probably not one American in 50 could name him if asked. His term, as mentioned earlier, expires on 12/31/2011.
There are no explicit criteria to serve as SecGen. In practice, a legacy from the cold war days of the UN's founding, the SecGen is not a national of any of the permanent members of the Security Council..i.e. is not subject to a veto. The Security council makes the nomination, and then it is approved by the General Assembly.
Also, there has been a pattern of "continental rotation" whereby SecGens come from different parts of the globe.
Now think about it. Here you have the ONE American, Obama, who would NOT be vetoed by any of the permanent members...
What's in it for the UN? Well, that's obvious. Many Americans today think of it as irrelevant and ineffectual. It is suffering huge financial problems, and faces the need to rebuild its HQ in NY, a huge expense that would primarily be borne by the US taxpayer. IOW, it needs a new image, a make-over, a new "face" if you will...
So, sometime in the fall of 2011, Ban suffers a "health crisis" and announces he won't seek a second term...the UN is in disarray, there is continuing chaos and crisis around the globe, and as the Security Council begins deliberations on a new SecGen, a resolution is introduced in the UN General Assembly calling upon Obama to accept the position. It passes by acclamation...( go ahead, tell me who would vote against it? ) and the media spectacle would be 1000x greater than the election of a new Pope.
And so, after a suitable period of contemplation and discernment, he accepts. Initially, he announces that he will take the position after his term expires, but here's where the fix is in... shortly after, he announces that he is resigning as President, saying that Biden is fully capable of assuming the office. Biden, upon being sworn in, announces that he will NOT run in 2012, leaving the field wide open for the Clinton restoration..
Congressman BillyBob..this one's for you...
Yes.........
Good thinking ... My estimate for probabilty of happening ... 50%.
FYI..my take..
>The key thrust of the GOP opposition will be attempts to repeal/curb Obamacare, and if he presses that battle, it’s almost a guarantee of his defeat in 2012. If he aquiesces, he’s admitted that he failed/lied to the American people in 2008, which will also probably lead to defeat.
Illogical. He will blame everything on “do nothing” republicans, and “the party of no.”
He will attack & lecture at every opportunity and the “Ministry of Propaganda” commonly referred to as the “Media” will give him endless air time and support him 100%.
Its nice to dream but lets not whistle past the graveyard again like we did in 08.
...and he has given the right for the UN to come into the country, breaching sovereignty. Also, another breach is allowing Sharia to sprout across the nation...
This would tie in nicely with all the stuff he’d like to enact that would give greater control and sovereignty to the UN, effectively giving himself more unelected power. Nice theory/speculation.
First a question. Isn’t there some rule that I heard about that says a President or Prime minister of countries like the US, England etc can’t be head of the UN? Not that they couldn’t circumvent that, after all Obama can’t even prove he’s elligable to be President.
Ather then that, it’s a really scary thought. If he were in that position I would be looking really hard at end time prophesy.
Chance of happening 0%.
The President of the United States has real authority and influence. The Secretary-General of the has (outside of the running of the UN bureaucracy) none.
Obama’s not stupid. He ran for President because he is a liberal true-believer and has goals he wants to accomplish. As President he can make a difference.
The Secretary-General of the UN is a post were small country bureaucrats are sent to put them out of harms way or at least out of their home country. It has no powers and little real influence. The UN bureaucracy as a whole is basically a high paid dumping ground.
Not going to happen.
Ha!
You may recall that Attorney General Eric Holder has indicated that voter intimidation in favor of Democrat candidates will not be punished. I do not for one second believe that our dear leader stands a 5% chance of being voted out in 2012.
You may also recall what Stalin said about "who counts the votes"?
The UN does not allow Security Council members to be Gen Sec, unfortunately.
If he became president of Kenya for a term, then yes.
Obama views AMERICA contemptuously.
Great Post.
“In practice, a legacy from the cold war days of the UN’s founding, the SecGen is not a national of any of the permanent members of the Security Council..i.e. is not subject to a veto.”
Makes more sense than any other option, other than arrest and execution for treason of course.

What if the UN (under orders from others) are actually running the US w/ Obama being a token president? If Hillary had won it would have been the same thing.
Future plan, Hillary runs for president, Obama competing with Bill UN Sec Gen . They’re all in it together...
Just thinking out of the box.
As I understand it, you’re both mistaken..the UN Charter sets no requirements for SecDef..as I mentioned in my post, it’s only tradition that does not allow a national from one of the Permanent ( veto power) members to become SecDef, under the ( until now reasonable theory) that they would automatically receive a veto...that’s exactly my point..who would dare Veto Obama...
There is no obvious winner at this point of the 2012 Republican Presidential nomination. Obama may figure that the massive media trashing of whomever it is who wins the Republican nomination will help pave the way to his victory. He doesn't need 50% of the popular vote--Lincoln won in 1860 with 39%, and Wilson, Nixon and Clinton won their first elections with not much over 40%. The Democrats' motto in 2012 will be "whatever it takes." It won't be pretty.

That would require UN bureaucrats to actually work. That is something they joined the UN to avoid. If you are the nephew of a Third World dictator and have managed to get a cushy job in New York, where you get paid a lot of money to do nothing, why would you risk that on trying to take over the world?
That is hard work and would cut into their tee times and cocktail parties. They would have to use their UN computers for something other than porn. No UN bureaucrat would be caught dead working for a living.
Personally, I think Obama fully expects to be President of the US for life. Probably will be re-named to USSA by then.
As far as the people's opinion? I think we will get to the point where the opinion of "the people" will be either ignored, or we will be told that the majority opinion favors whatever is happening to us.
It would be impractical to amend the Constitution to remove the no-third-term amendment, given that 13 states would be enough to block ratification, and there are enough Democrats who fancy themselves a future President of the United States (Alvin Greene among them, apparently) that he can't count on help from Congress to change the rules. He can't count on the military to support a coup. Even FDR failed in his attempt to pack the Supreme Court--I don't see Obama having the chance to add enough justices to the Court who would then discover he was eligible to serve additional terms.
Don’t count him out. I think there will be a huge emergency of some sort, manufactured or not, that will allow them to more or less declare that the Constitution is no longer in effect. Driving the nation deep into bankruptcy is one way to precipitate just the terrible emergency they need. All they need is some sort of plausible (to them) excuse.
0bama has become the leader of a huge cult of personality. His supporters do not even hear his words, they just follow.
I don't think the Democratic politicians would go along with a patently invented pretext--they're thinking in terms of the long-term success of their party, not the short-term success of one man, a narcissist who clearly cares very little for their welfare.
Obama may have his mindless followers in the media and labor unions and ACORN, but he came to power as beneficiary of the Democratic Party in a normal election, not as the leader of a mass movement like Hitler or Mussolini. A lot of the youth vote which gave him his margin of victory in 2008 has become disillusioned with him (in some cases because he hasn't been even more radical).
The American people may have allowed their constitutional system to be watered down in the last 77 years, but I don't think they would sit back and allow a complete takeover.
I hope you’re right. One thing that we have in our favor is that the American people by and large, will be pretty hard to control. 300M people with 100M guns, are going to be hard to bring to heel.
Obama wants to be President of Kenya.
Obama spent $23Million of our tax dollars to aid Kenya in creating a new constitution for that nation.
Besides making abortion legal in Kenya the new constitution now makes it possible for someone, born outside of Kenya who has a parent who is/was a citizen of Kenya, eligible to be Kenya’s President.
I’m sure that is Obama’s bolt hole for when the situation here goes to Hell.
Remember all that TARP money? I wonder how many billions of that Obama has hidden in overseas bank accounts?
