(Des Moines Register) — Des Moines police are trying to determine what led to a series of attacks outside the Iowa State Fairgrounds over the weekend that included the assault of two police officers.
At least three people were arrested Friday through early Monday morning. Other arrests may occur as officers investigate the incidents, officials said.
There are indications that some of the fights – which appear to involve mostly teenagers and young adults – were racially motivated, police said.
“We don’t know if this was juveniles fighting or a group of kids singling out white citizens leaving the fairgrounds,” Sgt. Lori Lavorato said. “It’s all under investigation, but it’s very possible it has racial overtones.”
Officials announced last week that they were stepping up security outside the fairgrounds after a series of attacks Aug. 14 that included a pair of stabbings. Investigators are still investigating those assaults and victims intend to pursue charges.
Sgt. David Murillo stated in a report on Friday night, “On-duty officers at the fairgrounds advise there was a group of 30 to 40 individuals roaming the fairgrounds openly calling it ‘beat whitey night.’ “
Jammie Carroll, 36, of Polk City, was seriously injured in the 3000 block of East Grand Avenue Friday night after a group of people beat him up, causing severe injuries to his eyes, cheekbones and nose, Murillo wrote. Carroll is white, and many of the suspects are black, police said.
State Rep. Ako Abdul-Samad, D-Des Moines, who has worked to fight gang-related violence, said he doesn’t have enough information to decide if the fights were racially motivated.
He said police comments that race was involved could miss other factors, such as nonracial taunting.
“Unfortunately, like any other city, you have certain parts of town that individuals congregate in,” Abdul-Samad said. “You have those that go into that area with no problem, and those who cannot.”

DES MOINES (WHOtv) — As police are investigating a rash of what could be racially motivated attacks near the Iowa State Fair, they’re also investigating one of their own officers.
One of the attacks occurred on August 14 in the parking lot of Gerry’s bar. Witness Brian Ray Fees, a bartender at Gerry’s Bar, says the attackers were beating the victim while shouting racial slurs.
“Just kill the white dude. Kick his butt. That kind of thing. A lot of expletives too,” Fees says.
Hoover High School basketball player Reginald White was identified by the victim and witnesses as the ringleader of the attack and arrested.
But according to police reports obtained by Channel 13 News, Police Sergeant Lillie Miller called the arresting officer and asked him to release White with just a ticket.
When the officer refused, according to the report, Sgt. Miller replied, “Fine, I will just bond him out.” And, police say, that’s what Miller did.
Now, Miller is being disciplined for not going through the proper channels in White’s arrest.

Of course he’s a liar and would demand the immediate firing of any police officer who said that race was the main, if not the sole, factor of assaulting those people and the officers trying to keep it from spreading further.
As far as Sgt. Miller’s actions go, wait till this mass beatings become even more widespread. Then you will see the hidden racial divisions that exist even in police departments, one of the last places they should exist but are nonetheless.

Miller’s promotion carries the distinction of being the first African-American female Des Moines Police Officer to be promoted to the rank of Sergeant.
Miller received her Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Iowa, her Master’s Degree and a Public Managers Certificate from Drake University where she was also inducted into the National Honors Society for Public Affairs & Administration, Pi Alpha Alpha, for her academic excellence. Miller joined the department in 1999, and has worked in several positions: Patrol Division, the Airport Unit, Inspections Unit, Office of Professional Standards, and is currently assigned to the Planning and Budget Section. Miller has also worked on a recruitment committee for the department. Congratulations to Miller and all officers who were promoted.

Unfortunately you may be right. I am sure that Reginald White thinks that any white cop who gets beaten down by blacks “deserves” it. He probably will also say to any white person who finds this kind of thing to be outrageous, that it is a “black thing, you wouldn’t understand cracker”. I do hope that if he does it again, next time he won’t be so lucky.
The original article referred to Al Sharpton. If Al was there, he would probably be cheering those idiots on. He would think of it as another rally to arms just like the Freddy’s Fashion Mart “gig” and would scream all about how the white man deserves it or somesuch.
