A curious thing has been happening on Google Maps -- the Lincoln Memorial is being misplaced in favor of the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial, which is a good half a mile south of the more famous memorial.
According to the Geographic Travels blog, this "misplacement" has been happening for about two days now. Typing "Lincoln Memorial" into the regular Google search bar brings up a number of listings related to the Lincoln Memorial, yet shows a map of the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial. (Click on the image to see the map that's being served up.)
Is this a Google Maps glitch, or could this have anything to do with the fact that conservative radio and TV host Glenn Beck is holding a controversial "non-political" rally at the Lincoln Memorial on Saturday?
Beck's rally, which is called the "Restoring Honor" rally, is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Eastern Time today on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. The rally purports to be non-political, and will "pay tribute to America's service personnel and other upstanding citizens who embody our nation's founding principles of integrity, truth, and honor," according to Beck. The Special Operations Warrior Foundation, Glenn Beck, and Sarah Palin are expected to host.
The rally has been the cause of quite a bit of controversy, with Democrat Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) calling the rally "blatantly political." The event also coincides with the anniversary of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s march on Washington and speech (which was given on the same steps of the Lincoln Memorial). Civil rights activist the Rev. Al Sharpton criticized Beck's choice of holding the rally on the same day as MLK's historic speech, saying that while "they have the right to rally," they don't have the right to "distort what Dr. King's dream was about."

Scratch Google, find a whole lot of 'em.
Not the first time those jerks at Google have had search engine “glitches”.
Heeeee Heeeee! The only ones they mislead are the loons looking to protest!
exactly!
Rally over, ‘glitch’ fixed now. Good on PC Mag for calling them out.
Seems to be working today, not that I don’t doubt they’d pull something like that.
Maybe GOOGLE MAPS is just that UNRELIABLE and people should consider a different mapping software...
I know I will
Yahoo Maps always worked really well for me most of the time.
>>>Problem is the people who attended the the 8-28 rally would know where the Lincoln Memorial is.
Anyone that needs google maps to find the Lincoln Memorial should exit the gene pool now.
I think it’s evil, when you claim to be a trustworthy mapping source, to deliberately trick people you don’t like.
I wish you didn’t always have to sign up to post things, because I’d like to thank PC Mag for pointing this out.
Americans criticized the Muslims' choice of building an Islamic center on the same ground as Ground Zero, saying that while "they have the right to build a mosque," they don't have right to "distort what happened in 9/11."
"They are having speeches condemning the Americans for opposing the mosque while calling for tolerance and sensitivity to other cultures. You can't have it both ways!"
My new house, in fact my neighborhaood, has been misplaced on google maps and google earth for some time.
Both yahoo and mapquest have it right though.
Looks fine to me. Jefferson is below Lincoln
It’s “fixed” now.
I’ve never knowingly spent a dime to enrich Google and never will. I’ll use their free products with a certain degree of skepticism and always prefer to check the competition (Yahoo and Bing) first.
By the way, what do they actually sell to be worth so much money?
What they’re talking about is the directions to the LM would lead you to the FDR memorial. Not the actual location of the LM on the map.
Not saying that they haven't been tampered with in this case, though.
Sorry.
ADHD.
of course it works now...
For example, if you put in for directions from Arlington VA to the LM both the map and the turn-by-turn directions would lead you to the FDR memorial way south of the LM. It doesn't do that today.
Al.....why don’t you just stuff it!
Al....the truth shall set you free! Why don’t you start with that you twit!
