Next time you decide to comment on another person's weight, you might want to ask them to comment on yours. At least that's what the results of a Harris Interactive/HealthDay poll say. That's if you tend to believe the same experts that brought you the H1N1 epidemic in 2009.
From Yahoo! News via Healthday:
Many Americans Don't Even Know They're Fat
Many Americans have skewed perceptions when it comes to their weight, often believing they are thinner than they really are, even when the scales are shouting otherwise, a new poll finds. As part of the Harris Interactive/HealthDay survey, respondents were asked to provide their height and weight, from which pollsters calculated their body-mass index (BMI), a ratio of weight to height. Respondents were then asked which category of weight they thought they fell into.
Somehow, I'm thinking these pollsters are no better than the carnival weight guesser. At least you get a fat stuffed animal when the carny gets it wrong.
Thirty percent of those in the "overweight" class believed they were actually normal size, while 70 percent of those classified as obese felt they were simply overweight. Among the heaviest group, the morbidly obese, almost 60 percent pegged themselves as obese, while another 39 percent considered themselves merely overweight. These findings may help to explain why overweight and obesity rates in the United States continue to go up, experts say.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 34 percent of adults aged 20 and older are obese, and 34 percent are overweight. Among children, 18 percent of teens aged 12 to 19 are obese, 20 percent of children aged 6 to 11 are obese, as are 10 percent of kids aged 2 to 5.
Are these experts correct? According to

“Are You Fat?”
Is the Pope Catholic?
Not saying that what this article says isn't true. I'm just saying that what is considered the "ideal weight" by the "experts" has gone down over the years.
More psychobabble.
We’re always suffering from something we don’t ourselves recognize. And the solution - for some reason - happens to fit right in with the PC political goals of the day.
What a coincidence!
BMI isn’t a really reliable indicator. It’s assuming because you’re height/weight ratio is high that you’re fat. FYI, muscle weighs more than fat. I’ve seen folks with 10% body fat weigh more than the “experts” say you should weigh.
Measurement of body fat is a much better indicator.
Anything under 12% body fat for women is considered dangerous. Over 25% is considered fat. Split that in half and you’re doing great.
First off, BMI is the most inaccurate predictor of health/obesity there is.
According to the BMI scale I’d have to be around 165-170 at 6’ tall to be normal weight. I was biking 100 miles a day at 200 and my body fat was under 10%. I’d be anorexic at 165-170.
Of course they can’t run around with calipers measuring 7 sites on your body for true body fat composition so they just go with whatever method will most likely fulfill their preconceived notions.
I get a real kick out of the charts and numbers used to measure us. According to the BMI chart and a Dr I visited, I am borderline obese - BMI 29.
BMI is messed up.
I got a note from my daughters school her last year telling me she was overweight.
She weighed 90lbs.
And that's why the left is using it. The switch to BMI came, amazingly, at the same time this whole obesity campaign came up.
Now, obesity is a problem but is NOT so terribly bad that it becomes the govt's problem to solve.
Why is the school measuring height/weight. That seems like a violation of HIPPA.
There’s a fellow I know who had to get his height/weight measured so his employer could calculate his BMI for the purpose of setting his health insurance premium.
His BMI came in as “excessive”.
I would judge him as darned-near “string bean”.
Looks to me like a scam by his employer to jack-up the employee contribution to health-insurance premiums.
I don’t know why they did it.
Was part of their gym class.
Anyway she was 90 lbs. and a size 3 in junior clothes and they said she was overweight by a few pounds.
Yeah right technically she can’t even donate blood because she doesn’t weigh enough .

I think the charts were written by pencil necked geeks. These science nerds looked in the mirror and said that was the ideal weight to height ratio.
When will these idiots leave us alone?
BMI is proven BS because muscle weighs more than fat and BMI only compares weight to height without considering muscle mass.
Is anybody else so sick of the regulatory tyranny? So what if somebody is a over or underweight compared to some lamebrained norm? We are individuals.
This type of nonsense is so tiresome. Maybe that’s the point of it,eh?
