Samsung increased its smartphone sales target for the year, and the company hopes to boost both its smartphone market share and handset profit margin into the double digits, a top executive said.

J.K. Shin, the president of Samsung's Mobile communications division, told reporters on the sidelines of the IFA consumer electronics show in Berlin that Samsung expects to ship 25 million smartphones this year, up from a previous target of 18 million. That earlier target, announced in February, was itself triple the number of smartphones Samsung shipped in 2009. The recalibration reflects in part Samsung's growing confidence in the smartphone arena.

Total smartphone sales in the US are targeted to be 60 million units in 2010; if Samsung's sales estimate is accurate, they'll own 42% of the market, making them the number one smartphone maker in the US, and solidifying their position as number 2 in the World (behind Nokia).

They have some pretty cool products coming to market. Their new tablet is supposed to be very nice.

I have had 3 samsung phones in the past. Never loved any of them and hated two of them.

My husband’s company makes touchpads for smartphones. I’m pretty sure they make the Samsung touchpads, and I hope any phones with Synaptics touchpads do well.

Ever since my first Samsung phone proved it knew how to swim and still work - I've been sold.
My current has been dunked twice and is still working well.

You'll never get me away from the Samsung line.

I wish politicians could see how technological innovation drives economic growth rather than pumping trillions of dollars into stimulating demand.

I’ve only had one Samsung phone, the i760 and I loved it. Only reason I moved from it was that I wanted the international capability of the HTC Touch Pro2 (CMDA and GSM).

I thought the story was interesting, though, for the sheer volume of smartphones that Samsung is selling. Over 2 MILLION units a month. That’s pretty much put them in the lead in terms of smart phones shipping in the US. Samsung’s got some home runs on their hands, and they’re capitalizing on it.

Bought the Samsung Instinct on the sprint carrier. Absolute worst expeirence ever. Phone freezes constantly, randomly calls numbers in my phone book while in my pocket. GPS never works. Terrible singal strength. Customer service is useless. I could go on and on.

I wish I knew how to get a class action suit against samsung and sprint.

Precisely. If you want to get people hired, then you need to encourage the engine of hiring, small business. And that’s not done by increasing taxation and regulation! Cut regulations and taxation for small businesses and watch them explode, and watch the unemployment number drop like Obama’s poll numbers...

Completely agree about the #s. Plus samsung as a company I like, but their phones haven’t been as robust as I prefer (or solid). HTC makes a better phone IMO.

I prefer my HTC, as well. The i760 was very good, and my only other phones (in the US) had been LG and Motorola units. Not that impressive in quality or features. I had a used Samsung 898 for a few months that was really pretty good, but showing its age (2 years old when I got it for a few months) as the volume control buttons didn’t work, needed to use the touchscreen controls.

Surprisingly, the old Gionee L6 I had for 2 years in China was the toughest thing I’d ever seen. Dropped countless number of times, run over with a pallet jack, dropped in a vat of speaker cone slurry, dropped in snow, lived in sand for a week, and still kept running. Still have it, and use it as a “loaner” for clients in China - it just doesn’t die!

Samsung has clearly struck a chord with the Smartphone public, especially to rack up 2 million units a month. It will be interesting to see if they extend that lead next year, too, as the Super AMOLED display becomes “the display” to have, and that will be exclusive to Samsung for all of 2011 (as they are the makers of the screen, and are planning 100% production capacity for their own use).
