Missy's update:

September 4th, 2010

Day 4 found us hitting the ground running! (I’m noting a tiring theme so far this month!) Jamie and Hannah have piano lessons on Saturday mornings, and Jamie threw in an art lesson too, just so we wouldn’t get bored. While Jamie was painting, I took the rest of the kids to the park in Alexis, where I can’t help but stop at the Cardinal Convenience store.

Usually I just use the bathroom, then buy a bottle of V-8 and a bag of popcorn while I’m there, but today I also took a lengthy phone call from a man in Mediapolis who might be interested in buying our camper! (Praying…praying hard!)

When we finally made it home (after topping off our morning with a journey through Save a Lot for groceries), I decided that a trip to the Henderson County Public Library was in order. A solitary trip. It’s so quiet there.

Meanwhile, back at Stately Bennett Manor, the kids had succumbed to their genetic predisposition to competitive charades! And the competition was heated!

I made homemade lasagna and a beautiful salad, which the three youngest kids ate almost single-handedly. They love salad!

In the meantime, everyone got a bath, whether he/she needed one or not…and they all needed it! And Grace and I won some new used clothes on e-bay! So soon, both of us will be able to start going places that have a “no shirt, no shoes, no service” sign! That’ll be great.

You PETA folks will hate this episode, but you NRA folks will love it! If you haven't seen this yet, this a vlog/blog put out by a Conservative pastor who also writes a newspaper column. I believe they live in the Midwest, judging by all the corn in the back ground. And they have seven kids at home, aged 13 to 4, and they decided to give up television, movies, video games, iPods, and social networking for a full month. They post a new one every day and I hate to admit it, but I'm hooked. I think it's wrong for them to encourage a media fast while making people crave their videos! :-) Warning: Addictive!

Excellent! Killing the TV is the best thing a family with growing kids can do. Focus on your family - not what idiots in Hollywood and NYC want you to.

I hate to be the turd in the pool, but keeping your kids stuck in the 1950s while the 21st century plows ahead isn’t much better for their education and future than allowing them to play video games 24/7. Instead of swearing off technology, why not teach these kids some Internet research and computer programming chops, show them cinematic masterpieces, and teach them to be discerning viewers/listeners?

Technology isn’t evil. You don’t have to rot your brains out with the trashiest programming in order keep up with the times. If kids get away with sitting in front of a computer all day, it’s the parents’ fault, not the computer’s. Teach them moderation, and encourage them to take advantage of technology and media in healthy ways. There will be plenty of time for timeless, real-word experiences.

OK, I misunderstood the article...I thought the family was swearing off ALL technology, but apparently they’re still letting the kids use computers, and only avoiding TV, radio, etc.

Still, there IS good programming out there, and almost a century’s worth of excellent movies—if you throw the TV out, you throw all of that out, too. I’m not advocating exposing kids to the weirdest of Hollyweird, but I wouldn’t want to raise my kids in a cultural cloister, either. They’ll be alienated from their peers when they’re older, and they’ll lack a certain body of knowledge that you can’t learn in textbooks, lessons and family outings.

Again, it’s only a bad thing if you use it in bad ways (i.e. too often, or only watching/listening to the mind-numbing garbage).

let me get this straight in my rumdum mind..

they swore off modern media... and they post the families videologed asses every day into the ether.

so instead of watching the tube, the tube watches them, then we can watch them; who the hell knows, maybe they are watching us watch them be watched by the media that they don't watch.

what a strange thing.
