Few Americans outside the beltway and Alaska knew much, if anything, about Lisa Murkowski , but we all do now. In her decision to mount a write-in campaign for her apparently lost Senate seat, she has become the poster girl for that great politicians personality disorder pathological narcissism. In plain English, back in the pre-psychiatric age, she is what we used to call a jerk.
Glenn Reynolds puts it in a more uptown manner: The Murkowski story embodies whats wrong with the traditional GOP: Self-centered, dynastic, and looking to lobbyists as primary allies.
In other words, a jerk.
Meanwhile, Ed Morrissey has a good roundup of some of the usual suspects thumb-sucking on whether the Alaska senator could possibly win this write-in candidacy, but I think they all miss the point. In this year of extreme populism, voters are ultimately going to gag on someone like Murkowski arrogantly trying to tell them it is business as usual, as if she has some form of droit de seigneur for her allegedly magnificent service in the US Senate.
Yes, I know some polls are showing her with a decent percentage and, yes, she has money in the bank, but its hard to imagine a significant number of those people finally making the effort, and it is an effort, to write in the name of such a person. Unlike Joe Lieberman, who ran successfully as an independent in Connecticut, she has no cause, other than herself. (And Lieberman was actually on the ballot.)
Oh, okay, she has the cause of a tired Republican Party that no one seems to want anymore.
And thats the point. We live in an exciting time when the possibility of change (real change not rhetorical change) is in the air. Murkowski comes along like Mrs. Scrooge and tries to squelch it. How pathetic.
One last word to the lobbyists (Chevron, ConocoPhillips and Marath0n Oil, etc) who apparently received email from Murkowskis chief of staff, alerting them an hour early to her imminent campaign. We live in a New Media Age where your behavior is being watched as never before. And, as you know, you have already been outed in this instance. Karen Knutson, Murkowskis chief of staff, showed herself to be a trigger-happy dolt by sending that premature email. One of you probably leaked it. Signing on for the Murkowski campaign is now bad news for your company. Stay away.
That is exactly what it has come to. The GOP has made a lucrative career out of 2d place ... all they want is a few more seats at the table, not to have the responsibility of a majority.
They have given up on the electorate. Frankly, I can appreciate why. But now, the future of the Republic is on the table and it cannot be guaranteed by compromise with the Democrats. If a rebuilt GOP does not appear, we are the Roman Empire ca 600AD.
If she was on the ballot with some other party then I could see where she could conceivable cause Miller some trouble. But write-in candidates are a joke, always have been. She’s not going to draw enough support to cost Miller the race. Not unless she throws her support to the Democrat and her supporters follow her.
Write in Lisa? HELL NO - VOTE JOE.
I’m wondering what she was promised by the Rats for running as a spoiler against Miller because she knows that a write in is an extreme long shot.
I agree, and I believe if she wasn’t from an old Republican family in AK she’d do just that, support a Rat.
She’s also ugly as sin, maybe the biggest reason not to vote for her.
We’ll never know but I’d have liked to have been a fly on the wall when the deal was made.
I figure , why spell her name right when she is a write in?
I think she's just gotta be stupid with narcissism (or syphilitic, who knows?). What could the Dems offer? Suppose it's an ambassadorship. First she's gonna have a tough time getting Senate approval, after having turned against her caucus, and the new Republican President (assuming not a pro-establishment moderate like Romney) will toss her out on her ass after 2012.
Instead she could have remained loyal to the party and been a top contender for Mark Begich's Senate seat in 2014.
Yep, they made her a deal she could not refuse. Wonder how surprised she will be on Nov. 2 when she sees what happens to the Dems.
“Jerk” eh!? How ‘bout Jerkette?
I’ve been muttering worse things, but I think that covers it in mixed company.
Obastard has bypassed the Senate and appointed dozens and dozens of people.
She’s a poisonous vipor. Where’s her money coming from?
No, she is doing it because she wants Miller (and Palin) to lose. She’s a vindictive spoiled brat who will fail in herobejective since not many like her enough to go to the effort of writing in her name.
And the problem with polls here is that they can’t register how many would willingly take time out to write her name. The only credible poll I saw had Miller leading with her a close second but that implies a traditional ballot. Princess here won’t be listed traditionally so those polls are obsolete. She won’t even come close to doing what Crist has done with a write in. This is what make her a joke. At least Crist had the possibly of splitting off liberals from the Dems and Reps. She is is going to split how many off who will pencil in the name? LOL
Did anyone notice how loud the crowd cheered when she announced she was running? It was deafening. The camera was up close and showed about a dozen supporters behind her. I suspect someone was ‘enhancing’ the sound.
Yep, I’ve been thinking about the Jerk thing and it doesn’t end in “ette.”
It would be interesting to have some one do a complete investigation top see if she’s getting any Dem/Soros money.
