Murkowski the Jerk
Pajamas Media ^ | September 18, 2010 | Roger L Simon

Posted on 09/18/2010 5:35:16 PM PDT by jazusamo

Few Americans outside the beltway and Alaska knew much, if anything, about Lisa Murkowski , but we all do now.  In her decision to mount a write-in campaign for her apparently lost Senate seat, she  has become the poster girl for that great politician’s personality disorder — pathological narcissism. In plain English, back in the pre-psychiatric age, she is what we used to call a jerk.

Glenn Reynolds puts it in a more uptown manner: “The Murkowski story embodies what’s wrong with the traditional GOP: Self-centered, dynastic, and looking to lobbyists as primary allies.”

In other words, a jerk.

Meanwhile, Ed Morrissey has a good roundup of some of the usual suspects thumb-sucking on whether  the Alaska senator could possibly win this write-in candidacy, but I think they all miss the point. In this year of extreme populism, voters are ultimately going to gag on someone like Murkowski arrogantly trying to tell them it is business as usual, as if she has some form of droit de seigneur for her allegedly magnificent service in the US Senate.

Yes, I know some polls are showing her with a decent percentage and, yes, she has money in the bank, but it’s hard to imagine a significant number of those people finally making the effort, and it is an effort, to write in the name of such a person. Unlike Joe Lieberman, who ran successfully as an independent in Connecticut, she has no cause, other than herself. (And Lieberman was actually on the ballot.)

Oh, okay, she has the cause of a tired Republican Party that no one seems to want anymore.

And that’s the point. We live in an exciting time when the possibility of change (real change — not rhetorical change) is in the air. Murkowski comes along like Mrs. Scrooge  and tries to squelch it.  How pathetic.

One last word to the lobbyists (Chevron, ConocoPhillips and Marath0n Oil, etc)  who apparently received email from Murkowski’s chief of staff, alerting them an hour early to her imminent campaign. We live in a New Media Age where your behavior is being watched as never before.  And, as you know, you have already been outed in this instance.  Karen Knutson, Murkowski’s chief of staff, showed herself to be a trigger-happy dolt by sending that premature email.  One of you probably leaked it. Signing on for the Murkowski campaign is now bad news for your company.  Stay away.

She’s going to say, “Joe Miller represents everything that is wrong with Washington.”

I think I may know the real reason Murkowski is doing this. Her loss was a real shock to her. She still has over a million in campaign funds. She has no chance to win as a write-in.

I think the real reason she is doing this is so she can pay her campaign staff another two months and use up all those campaign funds. She isn’t going to turn over her money to Joe Miller. Maybe she wants to reward those who have been loyal to her.

I hope this is the reason and hopefully she will “mail it in” (not try very hard) the next couple of months, while her staff continues to collect a salary.

Maybe some of Gore’s minions from the Florida recount days are out of work and can be hired to help throw out write-in votes for Lisa Murkowski. Clearly any that misspell her last name should be tossed out.

She lost the election. The voters have chosen not to re-elect her. The senate seat is not her legacy no matter what she says; it belongs to the voters of Alaska. So why is she even contemplating an independent run as a write-in? Doesn’t she know what an insult that is to her former constituents? Go away. Just go away. Pout somewhere else.

The Murkowski story embodies what’s wrong with the traditional GOP

I would be a little more specific than using the word "traditional."

"Traditional" is the party of Lincoln. The party of true civil rights. The party of liberty enshrined in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

Murkowski is a country club tag-along who will do anything to push true "traditional" Republicans out of the party.

People like Murkowski are the ones who throw the hissyfits when the GOP does not offer up candidates to their liking.

And yet when they force compromisers like Dole on us, they can't figure out why they lose elections.

Country-clubbers don't rule the party anymore, which probably explains Rove's recent meltdown.

......the traditional GOP: Self-centered, dynastic, and looking to lobbyists as primary allies...

That is exactly what it has come to. The GOP has made a lucrative career out of 2d place ... all they want is a few more seats at the table, not to have the responsibility of a majority.

They have given up on the electorate. Frankly, I can appreciate why. But now, the future of the Republic is on the table and it cannot be guaranteed by compromise with the Democrats. If a rebuilt GOP does not appear, we are the Roman Empire ca 600AD.

If she was on the ballot with some other party then I could see where she could conceivable cause Miller some trouble. But write-in candidates are a joke, always have been. She’s not going to draw enough support to cost Miller the race. Not unless she throws her support to the Democrat and her supporters follow her.

I think she's just gotta be stupid with narcissism (or syphilitic, who knows?). What could the Dems offer? Suppose it's an ambassadorship. First she's gonna have a tough time getting Senate approval, after having turned against her caucus, and the new Republican President (assuming not a pro-establishment moderate like Romney) will toss her out on her ass after 2012.

Instead she could have remained loyal to the party and been a top contender for Mark Begich's Senate seat in 2014.

No, she is doing it because she wants Miller (and Palin) to lose. She’s a vindictive spoiled brat who will fail in herobejective since not many like her enough to go to the effort of writing in her name.

And the problem with polls here is that they can’t register how many would willingly take time out to write her name. The only credible poll I saw had Miller leading with her a close second but that implies a traditional ballot. Princess here won’t be listed traditionally so those polls are obsolete. She won’t even come close to doing what Crist has done with a write in. This is what make her a joke. At least Crist had the possibly of splitting off liberals from the Dems and Reps. She is is going to split how many off who will pencil in the name? LOL

Murky knows it is unlikely she will win a write-in vote. Somebody said Storm Thurmond in the only one to have won a Senate seat this way, and that was long ago. Murky just wants to split the GOP and make sure Obama’s agenda gets a boost.

The fact is that, before the Tea Partiers upset things, there was only one major political party with two divisions, Team Red and Team Blue. The Tea Partiers are attempting to upset the Team Blue division of the major political party. Murkowski is faithful to her party, which is bigger than than either the Red or the Blue, and therefore wants Team Red to win. A write-in campaign serves that objective.

That's my theory ... but it could be that she's just a narcissistic b*tch. She sure looks like one.

Believe it or not, when a politician either loses an election, or retires, they are legally allowed to use the funds for personal expenses. Its basically a nice retirement nest egg, along with the pension.

Does her name have to be spelled correctly when written on the ballot by the voter or will they accept any spelling that is close? Murkowski is not an easy name to spell and a lot of Americans are terrible spellers. Any answers, Alaskans?
