A UK Independent item about an unreleased book by historian Frank Dikötter made me think about New York Times columnist NIcholas Kristof. Readers will see why shortly.
Amazon says that Dikötters Maos Great Famine: The History of Chinas Most Devastating Catastrophe, 1958-1962″ will be released on September 28. The Independents Arifa Akbar relays Dikötters core conclusion that At least 45 million people were worked, starved or beaten to death in China over these four years. This is a significantly higher number than the highest previous estimate of Jung Chang, who asserted in her 2005 book, Mao: The Unknown Story, that 38 million people were starved and slave-driven to death in 1958-61. The seven million extra deaths would move Changs 2005 total of more than 70 million into the neighborhood of 80 million, padding Maos lead over Stalin and Hitler as the worst mass murderer in human history.
The Independents Akbar also writes that Mr. Dikötter is the only author to have delved into the Chinese archives since they were reopened four years ago. If true, this reflects a startling lack of curiosity.
I hope Nick Kristof is just a little curious, and will peruse what Mr. Dikötter has documented when it becomes available. Perhaps it will move him to reach conclusions a bit different from those he reached when he reviewed Changs book in October 2005 (bolds are mine):

well, if 45 million murder victims isn’t worth the lights at the top of the Empire State Building for a night, I dunno what is!
When the Free Republic said that Stalin had killed 40 million, I’m going to repeat a quote a freeper said about Stalin as it applies to Mao: “Mao may have killed 45 million, but he never put a woman’s panties on a guy’s head (the remark was in reference to Abu Gharib and the criticism George W. Bush received about it).”
The seven million extra deaths would move Changs 2005 total of more than 70 million into the neighborhood of 80 million, padding Maos lead over Stalin and Hitler as the worst mass murderer in human history. But that's not taking into account population differences. If you factor those in, Mao can be viewed as somewhat of a moderate.

Commie bastards are responsible for murdering and slaughtering millions of people.
So much for the New York Times, the premier commie newspaper in the US.
The emancipation of women and end of child marriages...So Kristof listed women and children slaver as bad things back in 2005?
I'm sure he wouldn't do that today because, quite frankly, that would be anti-muslim.
That would be RACIST!
So much for the New York Times...Hey, they've got a long history of this. They were in on the original coverup of the original genocidal famine of the 20th century: Stalin's "purge" of 7 million "kulaks" in the Ukraine in the 30s.
"Purge" meaning starving the entire countryside TO DEATH with the grain needed to keep them alive locked up in commie-guarded silos in plain sight of they dying men, women and children. (Think about THAT.)
Never happened, according to the NY Slimes of the day, a slight historical "error" that's never been corrected.

“Hitler Not All Bad”
Marge Schott, former owner of the Cincinnati Reds, was effectively run out of baseball for similar comments, regarding another mass murdering leftist totalitarian of the 20th century.
As usual, the double standard applies.
I got a malware warning.
The Dems and the left have MORE reason to love Mao now!
Atheism in Action
Oh no.
Here’s the Newsbuster’s link to the same article. Apologies.
I guess there’s a reason I haven’t heard of that blog before.
In other words, Ukrainian rednecks to the lefty urban elite who often never show a bit of respect to the people who provide the food that they eat. Not a group for whom the PC world easily mourns.
The problem is that Marxism has never been put into practice correctly. If it had been there would be nobody around to dicuss its faults.
Nicholas Kristof wishes he was one of those 45 million, huh? =.=
Ukrainian rednecks ... Not a group for whom the PC world easily mourns. Not when those great commissars showed up at the UN and regaled NY Times reporters with stories of Socialist Victories... they were so, so, entertaining!
