CANCELLED: The Five Auto Brands Lost to the Great Recession
Car Dealer Review ^ | 10/4/2010 | CDR

The great recession hit the automotive industry hard — so hard in fact — five famous auto brands ceased to introduce any more cars. Most of these brands were axed after Rick Wagoner, then CEO of GM, was asked to step down at the behest of the Obama administration (See: Government Forces Out Wagoner at GM). For many brand-loyalists, the fall of these brands represent a sad day — watch the videos for first hand testimony and interviews.

I'd have told the commie mack daddy to pound sand, and sent GM into bankruptcy where it belongs.

Interesting that 4 out of the 5 canceled car brands are canceled to avoid bankruptcy, while Mercury is being phased out because of Ford’s popularity.

The whole GM episode was Stalin/Mugabe/Chavez to a T. Totally disgusting.

This is AT LEAST a year old, as it speaks of GM “avoiding” bankruptcy.

Notice the color! It's not a racer!

GM shutting down its Swedish SAAB operations. Gee, I wonder if that will affect the Swedish economy.

I saw a Pacer on the road this weekend! Looked like it was doing pretty well all things considering.

SAAB got bought by Dutch company Spyker. SAAB is NOT dead.
New models are being built in Trollhatten as we speak.

This article is quite old.

GM doesn’t have brands, they have BADGES.

And that’s part of their problem.

Mercurys are basically Fords anyhow. Like GMC trucks are rebadged Chevys. The marques lost all differences decades ago. The ends of Hummer and Saab are no loss to the world. Saturn has been in trouble saleswise for a long time.

I’m not sure why GM can’t just shut down the duplicative GMC line like Ford is shutting down Mercury.

If anything, I blame the 0bama regime for hastening the inevitable fall of GM and Chrysler by continuing to use our money to keep these companies running.

They both should have been allowed to crash and burn like any other company that insists on selling things that few people want to buy at a price that people are willing to pay.

Me too.... the Javelin was an awesome looking car, and could give quite a few cars a run for the money. Friend of mine had one in High School, did a little back-yard tinkering and had a line smoker!

Wasn’t there something different about Saturn’s union structure - did they even have a union shop?

I don't. The Javelin was a great car, and the AMX absolutely awsome. But the rest of the AMC lineup deserved to go. The only line worth saving was saved: Jeep.
