Pistol-Packin' Mama Grizzly

It’s official. I’m now permitted by the great state of Massachusetts to purchase and carry firearms.

It was not that arduous a journey, actually; I expected much worse. About a month before Gerry’s post about being shot at, I had completed the certification course required by Massachusetts in order to be allowed to apply for permission to buy a gun.

The course itself was hugely educational (as was, I’m sure, at least part of the point). It cost me $100 for a day of classroom course work and a day at the shooting range to qualify. The instructor, Mike, was an ex-military guy who was willing to spend as long as it took to make sure my classmate and I understood absolutely everything there was to know about guns and their history, from the invention of gunpowder to the present...

I learned how to shoot this year. I’ll be purchasing my first firearm next month. Next up is my concealed carry permit.

20 years ago I would have laughed you right out of the room if you said I would own a gun and actually enjoy target shooting. My how times change!

My wife was in that same category until my kids started going w/ me to the shooting range. She went to make sure I was being safe w/ them on time. She tried her hand at shooting a rifle one time and was hooked (and the best shot of all of us).

$100 dollars a day? That's Massachusetts for you. Minutemen to almost total disarmament in 200 years.

I know exactly what you mean. I grew up in a gun-free household. It’s not that guns were “BAD” or anything, they were just never a part of life.

But my brother-in-law took me shooting a few months ago (in Las Vegas) and we had a blast! It was so much fun, I wanted to do it more. Who knew?!

Heh. My instructor said that women were the best to train, because they listened and didn’t presume they automatically knew how to shoot. He always let the men shoot to qualify first, because the women invariably did better.

No, it was $100 for both days. Then another $100 to apply for the license. And evidently there are a lot more MA shooters than the state would have us believe.

So the Minutemen are still here. And I will now be one of them.

I grew up in the people’s republic of Maryland. Owning a gun meant you were a redneck or a criminal or both.

Then I moved to Virginia. Of course it took over 30 years living here to finally learn to shoot. But hey, I may be late to the party but I’m here!

Actually, since I can’t get the Beretta Neos, I was thinking about a S&W Ladysmith .38. But I still want a .22 to learn and practice with! Any suggestions?

...there are a lot more MA shooters...

So true. Most of the country believes that MA is only inhabited by the Shrieking Flaming Brie eating Liberal.
I’ve met more gun-toting-died-in-the-wool-Red-neck-Conservatives in MA than down here in SC.

Stay away from the big cities in MA and you’ll meet the descendants of the people who Stood-Their-Ground and told the British to shove-off...

I just bought the Henry Golden Boy Lever Action .22. You can go with the Ruger 10/.22 for less, but with the Henry, you feel like you’re holding a bit of history. DON’T scope it. Learn to shoot it...

So what I want to do is get a nice little Beretta U22 Neos as a starter gun to learn on. Sadly, Massachusetts gun dealers are not allowed to sell Berettas. Now what do I do?

Show em you are proud of Mass. Buy Mass made.

Proudly made in the USA since 1852

Ooops. You’re talking pistols. I would go with the Ruger with the extended barrel. The exact model escapes me at the moment.

I guess I’m both a redneck and a criminal. But then, I just moved here.
