Pistol-Packin' Mama Grizzly
Grand Rants ^ | 11-22-2010 | Stoutcat

It’s official. I’m now permitted by the great state of Massachusetts to purchase and carry firearms.

It was not that arduous a journey, actually; I expected much worse. About a month before Gerry’s post about being shot at, I had completed the certification course required by Massachusetts in order to be allowed to apply for permission to buy a gun.

The course itself was hugely educational (as was, I’m sure, at least part of the point). It cost me $100 for a day of classroom course work and a day at the shooting range to qualify. The instructor, Mike, was an ex-military guy who was willing to spend as long as it took to make sure my classmate and I understood absolutely everything there was to know about guns and their history, from the invention of gunpowder to the present...

I see this at Appleseed clinics a lot.

A Marlin 795 can be had for under $100 after the mail in rebate. Bring it to an Appleseed.

You had to pay a 100USD just to apply for a permit to carry a weapon?

Wow. Must be an expensive place to live. Oh well, good luck on the permit. Can be a fun sport for sure.

20 years ago, the inmates weren’t running the asylum. We now have a total fruitcake trying to play the role of President.

Heh, yeah, pistols. But my husband would give his left arm for a Henry Golden Boy... and I must say, it’s a mighty pretty rifle!

Ooops. You’re talking pistols. I would go with the Ruger with the extended barrel. The exact model escapes me at the moment.

Ruger Mark II or III. Browning Buckmark also gets high marks for reliable 22 pistols.

Yep, and it's non-refundable if anything in your background check isn't perfectly clean, or if the Police Chief doesn't like you... That's my Massachusetts!

For some reason, I REALLY don’t like the Ruger. Don’t like the way it looks, don’t like the way it feels in my hand. Don’t know why.

Here in the Free United States, we can walk into a store, pick one out, wait 15 minutes for the background check, pay, and walk out with it.

Hard to believe that Massholechussetts was the cradle of American Liberty.

The people that came from that cradle moved south and west years ago...Massachusetts and most of New England was restocked with socialist Europeans...

Thanks.

I suppose it covers “the expense of processing”

Cost here in Ak is (wait for it) $94.25. I guess they think the odd nuber ‘proves’ how closely they track cost of applications.

Fortunatly, permits are not required for CCW in State.

Best of luck on the permit, it can make a difference.

That loud popping sound was my head exploding. The Founding Father, especially those from MA, would be plotting a second Revolution today.

if the 38 you want to buy is a snub nose, remmber it has alot of rcoil, Iconvinced my wife to get a 380 bersa, alot less recoil and still enough knock down power to do the job of detering an intruder, if someone tells you it does’nt have enough knockdown power tell them to put a 380 round into a 2 by 4 and look at the damage.

It depends on the student. If someone WANTS to learn, they will learn. Women have special problems with weakness and small hands. Some women also have a problem with going to the range when it’s hot, cold, windy or wet. You don’t succeed by picking nothing but ideal conditions.

Most women who shoot for the first time treat it just as a one time event to be marked off their bucket list.

If you are serious about learning to shoot, join the IDPA in order to use a handgun or attend an NRA high power rifle match for rifles.

My local gun shop has a nice selection of Henry rifles. I salivate whenever I go in there.

I second that. That was the first gun Mom bought after moving from gun-neutral to pro-gun. She shoots like a pro!

While .22 ammo is certainly cheap for practicing, 9mm is also pretty cheap, and if you went with something like a walther pps, you would probably enjoy shooting it, more than a ladysmith. The Walther PPS is also MA compliant.

I have a PPS, and could shoot it all day long. I also have a Smith & Wesson 642, and even changing the trigger spring, my hand gets tired after about forty rds. The Walther, I can go seventy rds before my trigger finger is exhausted.

Or you could just buy both guns because one isn’t really enough...
