This is a movie based on the true story of a true Romanian legend: Ion Gavrilă Ogoranu (1923-2006)

Born in a Romanian family in the Fagaras County, he studied at Radu Negru high school in Fagaras then enrolled in two colleges: the Agronomy College in Cluj and the Academy of Economic sudies in Brasov.

He joined the Romanian Armed Forces in the famed 12th Brigade Mountain Hunters (participating in the on the western front campaign against Nazi Germany). He also enrolled at the Military Academy in Campulung.

He started his career as an anti-communist fighter while still in college. For almost a decade he was the leader of the "Fagaras" group of partisan fighters.

For his role in the anti communist armed resistance he was sentenced to death (twice) in absentia. However, for 29 years the Securitate (KGB's Romanian counterpart) failed to catch up with him.

Captured in 1976, he was saved from being put to death by the personal intervention of the American President Richard Nixon.

The "Portrait" premiered in European theaters on November 19th.

Hopefully it will be distributed and presented to the American public soon.

This reminded me of a book I once owned but can no longer find in my library, probably lent it out and then lost track of it. I'd like to get my hands on another copy.

Any FReepers out there ever heard of the book "Out of the Ice" by a man who went to the Soviet Union as a teenager with his family (his father worked for Ford) in the 30's, got emeshed in the power structure because of his athletic abilities and was not allowed to leave the USSR. He was sent to the gulags and escaped through Siberia. I saw him speak in the late 70's or early 80's in Southfield Michigan and it was the most riveting hour or two I have ever experienced. I just checked out imdb and they did make a movie out of it. I highly recommend it. If they stayed true to the story, it would make a phenomenal movie and would open the eyes kids who've been indoctrinated by their teachers and college professors and now ask what's so bad with Communism?

Thank you. Sometimes when I post, the link shows up and other times not. I don’t know how to make it show up every time - and I’ve read the html sandbox.

Another book that ties in to that story is The Forsaken. Until I read that I had not realized that a number of Americans actually did move to the "Soviet Paradise" and for the most part were never allowed to leave.
