Preparing for the End of the World: Making Your Family Tough
Human Events ^ | 11/30/10 | Skip Coryell

Posted on 11/30/2010 5:47:13 AM PST by Kartographer

In the opening article of this series I painted the following picture:

Close your eyes and imagine a world without electricity: no Fox News, no facebook, no email, no Blackberry, no cold drinks, no heat in the winter, no automobiles, no food and no way to cook it even if you had it. It’s the end of the world as we know it (TEOTWAWKI) and you and your family are going to die.

That’s a pretty bleak picture. But I left you with a little hope.

I clarified it by saying: “Unless, of course, you are prepared.”

You left out the worst part! to wit: “imagine a world without electricity: no Fox News, no facebook, no email, no Blackberry, no cold drinks, no heat in the winter, no automobiles, no food and no way to cook it even if you had it. It’s the end of the world as we know it (TEOTWAWKI) and you and your family are NOT GOING TO BE ABLE TO READ FREEREPUBLIC”

;-)

Preparedness sadly seems to be analogous to the story of two friends being chased by a bear. They don’t have to out run the bear — one just has to out run the other.

IF the SHTF, sadly much of preparedness will be about surviving The Great Die Off and The Great Civil Disorder with your life and assets marginally intact.

Lay up your treasures in heaven.

I have a gun and an axe. With them I can protect family, hunt, cook, and heat.

Mindset, tools, supplies, skills, location an awareness must all be considered...... Tough is a result of successful work accomplished under arduous conditions IMO.

Something that can be trained for but never proven or graded unless experienced. The mental stress required to teach one to be tough is not possible when they know there is an end to the training or exercise they can abandon at any point they wish.

Like the popular survival shows....they know their friends are aware of their location an time line. No confusion or fear is present in the scenarios presented. Such is a killer that must be counted as a valid mental block to survival.

My opinion....

Funny thing every year my Insurance agent talks to me into buying or up grading my Home Owners insurance in case my house burns down and yet it never happens and I hope it never does, but I am not going to stop buying the insurance just because it hasn’t happened.

That’s what I tell my husband. I swear, having an extra supply of food and necessities is anthropological or instinct for me. I have always worried about running out and times like these make me even worse.

It hasn’t helped that I’ve lived 30 minutes from the nearest store for 40 years either.

I have done prep but I am not done yet.

I wonder if there are those out there that have a little nagging voice saying “Screw it”. If it is truly TEOTWAWKI, is struggling to survive worth it?

Even if we were to build a new system from the ashes, would we only not end up in the exact same place with those that think the world owes them a living, free food and someone to wipe their rear?

To me prepping is about being self surfactant. Maybe you want to be the one on the news standing on a bridge and waiting for the ‘guberment’ to bring you cheese, bottled water, and a nice FEMA trailer, but for me and mine I make plans to take care of our needs. Sadly to many think that God only expects prayer from you, I think he makes it clear he expects those who can need to work and provide for themselves.

I keep supplies on hand for about 3 weeks in case of a hurricane or some other natural disaster but I’m really not interested in figuring out how to survive in a Mad Max world. I’d just as soon die early and be with my Creator.
