Would a national sales tax help bring down the deficit?

Could a national sales tax help fix the deficit and gain enough political support to break the stalemate in the nation's capital? Yahoo! reader Brad Sylvester believes it could.

Following a contentious midterm election, some 81 percent of respondents to a recent ABC News/Yahoo! News poll said they expect partisan warfare and inaction to continue over the next two years.

...

There are plenty of ideas on how to return the government to fiscal responsibility. ...

Many Republicans refuse to consider any tax hikes at all. And many liberal Democrats — who, ironically, may have even more power in the party now that many of their more moderate colleagues have lost their seats — can't stomach the thought of cutting back government services or programs...

Have a garage sale of Washington DC, I agree..the problem is the situation is now dire and we need immediate action, I fear we will not get it..Still too much BS going on, those that add to bills should be run out of town and tarred and feathered..Cut spending if it leaves this country with dirt roads, no government agencies but essentials and do not give them the right to rob the citizens for it..

This is what we need: a big fat list of crap and pork we can strip right out of the budget.

Yeah, if it replaced the income and corporate taxes, and taxed ANEW the 50+ million illegals.

It would amount to a tax cut for the rest of us once they start sharing the burden.

Only jerkoffs think that the solution to any problem is to find another way to rob the citizens. The solution to the deficit is to cut programs, put ten percent of everything that comes in on deficit reduction, and live within the limits of the 90% that's remains. Say the deficit reduction is, “for the Chilren” since it's their money we'd be giving them back.

Really, what kind of idiot is still looking for ways to increase revenue when it's obvious that no matter how much the government takes in they're going to spend even more?

Regards

They are going to confiscate a lot of wealth through the death tax, but if you make a sales tax or give them everybody's estate all they will do is go spend crazy.

You first have to make a balanced budget constitutional amendment.
You also then have to put SS, Welfare and everything but the military on budget IMO.

We have to handle the spending problem before we make believe we are addressing the deficit.

At the end of the day, we just have too much spending.

Which is really why focusing on the deficit is such a mistake. You can have a small deficit with huge spending and huge taxes. I don't know why our side keeps falling into that trap. Stop the bloody spending!

I think a National Sales tax is a good idea!

If at the same time they eliminate income tax.
Taxing consumption will promote savings, but
more important is that EVERYONE will be paying TAXES.

As it stands now - half of us are carrying the other half.
If everyone pays taxes they will not be such a hurry to increase them and pay more attention to government spending.

Now half the country wants tax increases because they are net beneficiaries.

No, adding a national sales tax will not bring down the deficit. Only a drastic reduction in government spending, and a flat tax will do so.

Just eliminate social programs and other spending and no tax increases are needed!

Start by eliminating 80% of government programs and all the people that work for them!

Adding a national sales tax would be like drilling a hole in the botttom of a leaky boat to make it “easier” for the water that had leaked into the boat to drain itself out again — through the new hole.

I am up for that, we need our own energy supply until the middle east and commie situation settles..and the lease would help pay off the debt, but we can no longer look at assets as a way to move forward with grand ideas, that era is gone, we must get out of debt, and starve the federal government of its capacity to do this again..
