On December 22 Barack Obama signed into law the repeal of the “Don’t Ask Don’t tell Policy” (DADT) starting the process to eliminate the military’s ban on openly gay troops. Even though the law is in effect, the complete removal of certain personal conduct provisions in the UCMJ will take time, but the end of DADT is here.
Survey
The So-called survey used to justify this change was a joke. It was nothing more than a con job to sell the American people the concept of allowing gays to openly serve in our military. What the pundits won’t tell you is that the majority (66%) of the military either does not want this change or refused to answer the survey. Of the troops that responded approximately 36% planned on leaving military service rather than deal with openly gay members.
Forty eight percent of Marines responded that they will consider leaving the Corps earlier than planned.

Of course the media is not going to tell the truth. I think that people will wait to get out until the economy improves though. I think that the military will have a hard time with retention in four years (approx time for the economy to get back to normal). With the GI Bill, everyone can now go to school which is another thing that will keep retention low (later on).
First, it would decimate our ability to fight on more than one front.
Second, it would virtually assure a return to the draft and the short terms of service that it would bring back with it.
According to some who are better informed than I am, the return of the draft is one of the intermediate goals. Of course the ultimate goal is the transformation of our Armed Forces into ineffective obedient lap dogs.
I think a draft would be good. Elections have consequences. Also, it takes a while, but even a short term enlistment has the potential to create a conservative in the long run. When men look back on their lives the time spent on active duty comes to mind first, and most are very proud of it, even if at the time they were less than pleased.
A lot of conservatives and independents blather about how we shouldn't put social issues on the agenda but should just stick to economic matters. Well, every one of these cultural battles the fascists win has consequences and those consequences each and every one make it less likely that we can turn things around without violence.
The cultural battle is THE battle. The reason our economics are down the drain is due to the cultural war the fascists have been fighting and winning for forty years. Most of the victories they've gotten have been due to the mistaken idea that we shouldn't fight that sort of battle.

Without strong senior NCO’s and Officer Corps, the military will become liberalized. I see an overall reduction in esprit d’corps, a general degradation of the quality of commanding officers, and a wimp-a-mization of our troopers in the offing.
I served proudly in the Marine Corps for 7+ years and cringe at the changes I see about to be foisted upon the Corps. I’m hoping that the active duty personnel will resist this by all means possible (subtle and otherwise).
I catch cold in drafty places.
Why do you think the draft would be good’ Have you served during the draft? Did you fight a war during the draft? I did and it wasn’t fun. Wvery rapist and criminal going through the court system will be offered a choice of going into the Army or going to jail. That may appeal to you civilians but it is a nightmare for the officvers and NCOs who have to lead these guys into combat and focus a major proportion of the time administering UCMJ against these guys. Screw the draft, I don’t ever want to see it again.

Did you serve in the “draftee” military?
I did, and it was not pleasant, to say the least.
Pay at the time was double digit/month and accommodations were more than Spartan - I believe the term used to day would be “ghetto”. The conflict in RVN did not help as resources were pulled from everywhere to feed that conflict.
Worse the bulk of the “draftees” I worked with (in the USAF to avoid draft into the Army) were, for the most part, pretty worthless. They could be counted on to work - enough to stay out of trouble. And if someone was watching.
Trips to an Army installation were a wonder. While at Ft Hood, for example, I noted that all latrines had no doors - to try and slow the use of drugs on the installation. AWOL rates were high and equipment was not maintained.
Too many people who did not want to be there, were forced to serve.
To be sure, there were some very professional folks serving at the time, and a very large number that were not.
Would a draftee military be cheaper?
Yes, yes it would. You do get what you pay for however.
Would it ‘make’ conservatives out of people?
I doubt it very much.
The culture of America has changed so much in the last, say 40 years, that I doubt a conscript military would even work.

I think this time it would be the tea partiers marching in the streets against the draft.
If the draft is not an option then perhaps with the “repeal”, we no longer have a viable Armed Forces model. Honorable Service with an all volunteer system is going to be strained to the max once the perverts openly fill the upper ranks, NCO and Officers.
